Here and Now

I know there is a lot of negativity towards the "Here and Now" perk. Can anybody please explain why it is that bad. I used it and the extra attribute points or whatever you may call them came very handy, so why the negativity towards that particular perk. Personally i think there are more worthless perks than that one. Worst perks then Here and Now:

- Retention

- Bloody Mess

- Math Wrath

- Hand Loader

- Friend of the Night

Here and Now isn't quite as bad in New Vegas than it was in Fallout 3, but it's still a lousy perk because leveling up in both games is all too easy. And when you gain that extra level with Here and Now, you don't get to pick a perk with that new level. So you've wasted two perk slots; one on Here and Now, plus the one you would have gained if you had leveled normally, at least in Fallout 3. Since you wouldn't get a perk in New Vegas with the next level anyway, you're not losing anything by taking it, which is why it doesn't svck as bad.

As far as the rest of the ones you mention, they're more situational or preferred build oriented. Some characters might find them very useful while others will have no use for them at all. I'd say every one of then, though, is far better than Here and Now.

Retention - if you use magazines to buff your skills a lot, the extra time the buff lasts could be very useful. It would be more useful early to mid game than it would be late game though, since by then your skills without buffs are going to be higher. I usually don't take it myself.

Bloody Mess - personal preference. Some people like seeing blood and guts flying everywhere, some find it annoying. The 5% boost to damage is okay though. As far as I'm concerned, I get tired of the gibbage quickly.

Math Wrath - someone who uses VATS a lot would find this one very useful, especially combined with other perks that improve action point amounts and regeneration, and perks that increase VATS hit chances. If you don't use VATS much, then it probably isn't worth taking. I don't use VATS much, so I don't take it.

Hand Loader - very, very useful for a Guns character who uses the custom ammunition recipes at the Reloading Bench a lot, which most Guns oriented characters probably will. All of my Guns characters take this one.

Friend of the Night - a character who wants night vision without having to bother with buying or scrounging Cateye or Ghost Sight might find this one useful. Me, I usually try not to be out at night if I can help it.

I liked Bloody Mess in Fallout 3, but it doesn't really fit New Vegas's sombre atmosphere. As for Here and Now, it's nice if you want to level up quickly but the amount of experience in the game means unless you're doing a gimmick run or speeding through you'll almost certainly hit the level cap with time to spare before the end anyway. Even in the old Fallout games getting more experience via perks seemed pointless, because there are plenty of helpful perks for each build and I don't feel like sacrificing them for maybe an extra level's worth of skill points.

Considering how easily one can gain XP in New Vegas, the Here and Now -perk is absolutely the most useless perk.

The only reason I can come up with for taking Here and Now is if you want less perks.

About the only other perks that come close for uselessness are Infiltrator and Computer Whiz.

I really don't understand why Obsidian didn't do anything about those, they were so obviously broken in Fallout 3. Those two definitely qualify as the most useless as far as I'm concerned.

I agree, those two would tie for second in a useless perk list. I've never locked up a terminal or broken a lock.

I can tell you now that each one of those is exponentially better because they actually help you on the long term. Here and Now is just about the dumbest and most unoriginal perk I've seen.

I look out Here and Now as one of the perks that's either take it or leave it.

Not saying it's one of the more favorable perks but I'd be lying if I said I never used it before. Some times I just get an urge to take it and on more than one occasion I have.

It's not like it's hindering or being the players who don't like it or use it so I say let it be.

Here and Now is a terrible perk because when you hit the max cap of 30 or 50, you have one less perk then you normally would have due to taking Here and Now. It's better to take the time and level up, instead of wasting it on Here and Now. It's the same reason why Swift Learner is a terrible perk outside of the Chet Glitch, although one could argue that picking one perk of Swift Learner could offset the -10% exp penalty of Skilled. Although the same reasoning applies, if you hit the cap then that perk is useless too.

I personally always have characters with high INT, so I've never been in a situation where I so desperately need the extra skill points right now that taking that perk seemed like a good idea. I don't know, maybe it makes sense for a low INT character.

Bloody Mess I would say is about as good as Black Widow/Cherchez la Femme/Lady Killer/Confirmed Bachelor. Those give 10% damage against half the enemies, this one gives 5% damage against all the enemies. If you like the giblets (which I personally don't - makes it hard to loot after a big battle), it's an okay perk.
