Gilliam has been placing sensor modules in certain locations, which will track movement nearby, basically Oocly explaining the small red blips you get on your compass that tells you where the enemies are. He also places a few around the perimeter of where he's going to sleep, just in case. Being an ex-BoS and a tinker, he carries a small handheld computer where the information of the modules goes to.

He needs to have a hammer and wrench in his inventory in order to repair items.
