Were the Nords not committing Genocide...

Were the Nords not committing Genocide when they moved into Skyrim?

The moved into the Elves land and slaughtered them, from what I understand.

If this is true, some of the "heroes of Skyrim" are awful people!!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, because I pretty much hate Nords right now.

Why are they praised for almost slaughtering a whole race!

What was left of race ended up being enslaved!

Lots of people say Nords are their favorite, which I don't understand.

I can't convince you that the Nords were not "awful people". According to http://uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Frontier,_Conquest..., the Nords were the first in a line of human settlers from Atmora, but "the only one that failed to find a method of peaceful accommodation with the Elves who already occupied Tamriel." This makes it sound as if violence marked almost all their dealings with the elves. However, I can tell you that just about every race of Tamriel is guilty of some atrocity. It is not a nice place, and its history is drenched in blood.

And now I eagerly wait as the Nords Rule and Elves Rule parties of fans line up and once again try to claim that either side was in the right, or at least less guilty than the other.

They got a little pissed at that whole Kill every nord thing that happened at Saarthal.

Attempted(and successfully attempted) genocide is kind of the norm for tamriel.

But when the gods of the world are practically demanding it, its to be expected.

Is and is not don't exactly get along well together usually.

The Nords are a violent people historically. They've never been portrayed as nice.. the Dunmer were/are crazy Daedra worshipers and people love them too. Slaughtering a whole race isn't so bad. They're just killing extensions of themselves, they just don't know it. TES is kinda funny like that. You might actually become a god by participating.

History is written by the victor and there are always plenty of people who would rather believe a heroic tale full of good people than a tale of humans acting like humans, killing everything they see.

On our own world there are still plenty of people that believe the lies and propaganda of the Romans and the Romans don't even exist anymore.

This is because the lie is prettier than reality.

The elves were just as bad, but of course they had the moral advantage of it being their land that was invaded.

I thought Honor was a huge thing for the Nords, though?

Seems odd to me that such Honor would come from Genocide.

I'll always be fans of Khajiit though.

I already expect them to steal and back stab everyone so I really doubt they can let me down :)

-Nords move to Skyrim from Atmora, rapidly expand

-Falmer become worried, and kill the infestation before it spreads too far (wipe out small Nord settlement)

-Nords come back after the slaughter and begin an extermination campaign, after several wars the Falmer are basically wiped out, Nords continue to hunt remaining Falmer like its a sport (Falmer technically exterminated).

Was the Nords response unwarrented? No

Was the Nords response way over the top? Yes

Another question, while I'm here.

Are the Falmer the snow elves?

If not, what was the name of the race of Elves that became the falmer and how did the snow elves die out?

The Falmer are the Snow Elves, just like the Altmer are the High Elves

http://images.uesp.net/1/17/SR-creature-Falmer_02.jpg were enslaved, blinded, and poisoned by the Dwemer after turning to them for help.

The Falmer http://images.uesp.net/6/63/SR-npc-Knight-Paladin_Gelebor.jpg before they devolved

There's even talk that the Dwemer committed the night of tears instead of the Falmer. But I don't blame the Nords for that. Honestly if the Nords didn't win, the Falmer would have driven them into the sea regardless.

The Nords at least attempted to live peacefully unlike the Redguards who killed everything in sight when they came over from Yokuda.

And they didn't commit genocide, they just fought a successful campaign against an enemy. The Dwemer were the ones who defiled everything it means to be a Falmer to the point that people only associate that word with a nasty vile goblin like creature instead of the glorious civilization.

It was genocide. Even after the Falmer as a nation and people were defeated, the Nords persisted to hunt them like rabbits. They wanted EVERY Falmer to be gone.

If it was a successful campaign then the Nords would have stopped after the last Falmer kingdom/hold fell.

The last Snow Elf in Dawnguard prefers to describe himself as Snow Elf and the underground Falmer as the Betrayed.

I'm not sure Saarthal counts as a small settlement. Seemed like it could be a pretty impressive settlement. And it would have symbolic meaning, being the first Atmoran settlement. Not saying this in any way to justify anything, of course, but it is worth noting I think.

The falmer means the betrayed
So it only refers to the blind ones, does it not?
Im confused because everyone is refering to them as Falmer and not snow elves

No, Falmer is an elven word meaning snow elf.

The word mer means elf.

Gelebor, the last true Falmer, refers to what the game calls Falmer as the Betrayed and to himself as Snow Elf.

He feels the name Falmer is history, referring to their civilisation before the Nords.

Falmer = snow elves just like:
Dwemer = Dwarves (but not actually short)
Altmer = high elves
Dunmer = Dark Elves
Orsimer = Orcs

Etc...

Snow elf is essentially the mannish form of the word Falmer. The "intact" falmer Gelebor prefers to be called a snow elf simply because the word Falmer is strongly associated with the betrayed.

Dwe-mer means deep elf :)

Dun-mer is dark elf.

Alt-mer is old/ high elf.

Bos-mer is wood elf (incidentally the word for forest in my language is bos.)
