To Destruction Nay Sayers, A Question.

Post » Tue Aug 13, 2013 2:00 pm

Besides things like combining destruction with other skills of magic, why don't I hear more people talking about complimenting their destruction mage with staffs? Staffs are an important tool for a mage just like a warrior's weapon. It gives you something to fall back to when you're out of magicka, and the charge even increases when your destruction skill increases. That goes for weapons with destruction effects in general. So, why aren't more people using them? Do they feel cheap? I sure don't when I twinkle finger it up. It seems strange to me to have a mage with no kind of back up weapon of some kind. Battlemages use melee, and sometimes even a combination of melee and staffs which I think is badass, and either way you dont have to sit there with your thumb up your butt while that troll is chasing you slowly regenerating while you run backwards spamming the LT button to get that one last fireball out before it swipes you d-....to late. Shoulda used a staff

I don't have magicka issues, just dealing enough damage quickly enough, which generally means duel wielding.

Do staves scale in damage with perks?

Destruction magic is powerful. If you use a staff you are unstoppable.

*sigh* Why you do this?

I'm not a nay sayer. Far from it. The thing with staves or staffs, whatever: I hate staves, mainly because it's not a staff. It's an oversized wand. That have the same effect as a spell I can cast without the staff. I can't block with it. I can't bash with it. It should have been a 2h weapon to begin with. If the staff enchanter allowed for making staffs with 2 effects, cool. But no. I don't like them.

No just with potions. Only real time I find destruction to be weak to where I have to bump up the regeneration high is legendary, as its a bit crazy with the damage reduction on that difficulty. The staffs help out a lot to keep me dangerous when my stores are low, then I switch back when I've regened. Works beautifully.

Well, it would have been nice for a staff to be usable as a 2H weapon but they're still very useful especially in non-developed schools like having a summoning staff for a Destruction mage with little or no Conjuration skill.

This.

I like using staves, but the way they were implemented is shabby.

In Oblivion it was acceptable. You had the staff for magic and blocking, and could simultaneously cast inherent magic. With Skyrim's left and right trigger system, it loses it's utility. And now it just becomes a tool for warriors...

Staffs need an overhaul in the next game, no doubt.

I have no complaints for block because my mages don't get close, and when they do I just stun lock then run away. Thats about the only time I really dual cast. Unless its a dragon of course. But yea, I only dual cast when the enemy is too close, otherwise I'm just wasting magicka. If I'm out of magicka and need to use a staff, I'm already well out of the way to do so and not need to block.

Honestly the only Mage I ever had hardly ever used em. Either I didn't wanna spend the coin to get one or the ones I would find would always seem to be forgotten at home and besides that I found them to be corny in appearance and how they were held.
Mostly I just forgot about them all together even when I had more than one in my inventory.
Also, since their basically considered a one H weapon why can't I dual wield them? Sure it would look even more ridiculous than they currently do but still c'mon.

I've only played one pure mage and he did use staves in the manor you described but lately all I've been building is hybrid classes and when my battle mage runs outa juice I just whip out the sheild and get my hands dirty. I do use them sometimes and I always have at least on in my inventory but lets face it, I usually forget I have it.

Staves feel slow to me. I bet they're the same speed but they feel bad to me, sort of clunky. Hand casting seems smoother.
