Storing my horse?

Post » Wed Aug 28, 2013 12:17 pm

Damn horses.... They always walk off from me. How do I get my horse to stay in a certain place? Or store him at a location. Currently, in the "Promises Kept" quest, I am riding Frost, and am scared to get off him, for fear of losing him. I never play with horses, but now I have one I am a little attatched and want to know how to keep him..... Halp?

Treat me like a first time elder scrolls player (even though I've been playing since the third installment...). Explain everything like I'm 5, plz?

Note, I just finished "Promises to Keep" by persuading the man to let me keep the horse. By "Persuade," I mean coerce, but that's how the game says it.

The horse should appear next to you if you fast travel, even when he is on the other side of the map. But if he does not, he is propably dead...

But how do I store him? I can build a stable at my house... Can I keep him there? And by "keep him there" I mean: Will he STAY there?

I also hope someone can answer this as it seems that once I ride a horse it follows me everywhere for the rest of the game. Even QT into cities I get the message that my horse is being kept in the city's stable. Once I actually had to kill a horse just to get it to stop following me everywhere.

This is why I don't bother with horses anymore--that, and the fact that fighting from them svcks. Unfortunately, I have no answer to the question. :(

I ran into this as well, but the horse got killed before I tried my solution. I think you can dismount and 'stable' the horse some place and then try walking, instead of fast traveling. They won't follow you if you don't fast travel, right? However, what happens if you use a carriage?. If you dismount at the Whiterun stables and then hire the carriage, will the horse be there at your destination (all the way in Solitude, for example)?

In general, I gave up on horses because the nuisance outweighs the benefit. Pluse, I hate it when they get killed. I did get one for the stable at Lakeview just so it doesn't look so empty but that horse kept charging bandits and getting killed. Now, I'm content with an empty stable at Windstad manor.

The horse AI is set to you when you purchase one. Only "owned" horses will stay put, when you dismount. In other words... "stolen" horses will start walking off to their original location, should you dismount.

Now, by stay, I mean in that spot unless you Fast Travel. The owned horse is part of you now. The only way to permanently get rid of them is to kill them. Or purchase another horse. In which case you are just trading one owned horse for another.

The http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/14950/? is a great mod. I have Fast Travel disabled and utilize horses all the time. In fact, I can't imagine playing without it.

I find each horse has its own personality I. Skyrim. I literally killed one because whenever I got off it he would start walking away, by the time I was done killing something he would be 2 miles away.
Then the next horse I got would just stay wherever I got off him and not move for anything.
The last one which I'm currently using now will follow me wherever I go and will assist in fights, he is DEFINITLEY my favorite on of the three.
That one that would just walk away aimlessly really pissed me off, I used to punch it every time I would catch up to it then call it a [censored].

I had a similar thing happen to me as well. I helped Shadr clear his debt with Saphire in Riften. Apparently since he works in the Riften stables, I got a free horse afterwards. Ive done very very very little fast traveliing in this current game. I'm about 31 hours into this game and this instance with Shadr occurred about hour 5 or 6. Still, I dont want to kill it. I do have the house in Lakeview with a stable. Surely there has to be a way to keep it there.

Unless you purchase the horse with gold, it doesn't directly belong to you. It could be one you took from somebody who got killed, and so wasn't technically stolen, or it could be one you -did- steal, either way, it doesn't belong to you. It will walk away, presumably back to wherever you found it, whenever you aren't riding it. Horses you bought will stay where you dismounted them, follow you in fast travel, and kick the ever-loving crap out of any hostile entity that comes near it.

Nope, the one that was walking away from me was purchased fair n square from the Whiterun stables.
Also I have had a glitch where I owned 2 horses at the same time. Whenever I fast travel to castle Volkihar there's 2 horses that are llabeled as mine....now only if I could get Serana to ride one(seriously, why was that never added in-Xbox)

If you have Dawnguard DLC you can get Avrak. You can park Frost at your stable and summon Avrak.Since Avrak is now your horse,Frost won't follow you around anymore.

Well, this hasn't been my experience.... I came upon two giant frostbite spiders from a distance as I came over the peak of a hill, they were fighting eachother just behind the peak of the second rise. I got into the valley, loosed at arrow so it would arc perfectly, heard the stickof it hitting, ride over the peak and they're both dead... My guess, one killed the other and had very little health left, and my arrow finished the last stander off.... Pretty sick. And swinging my Ancient Nordic Battleaxe with one hand is rather awesome as well. Haven't tried it yet.

Good question. Very good question.

But ah dun play on teh Pee See. D:

This is basically what I'm experiencing. Yay fellow sympathizer.

Nope. Persuaded this guy and he paid ME and the horse instantly went from "Steal Frost" to "Ride Frost." you are incorrect, sire.

SOLUTION? I THINK SO. THANK YOU. YOU ARE A LADY AND A SCHOLAR. GOD BLESS YOU. AND YOUR FIRSTBORN.

What... is that?

I'm sorry, but it wasn't made apparent what your current platform was. I just threw that out there on the end of what had hope to be some sort of explanation as to how the mechanics worked..

I have a stable and my horse is always there, though I've never used him. If horses behave like followers, then anytime you enter and then exit a city, the horse should be there waiting unless dead.

Shadr lends you the horse. That means it's not yours, and when you dismount, it will start walking back to Riften stables. Without mods, you will not be able to keep it there. Even a horse you purchase will follow you around if you fast-travel, although at least it'll stay put in the same spot if you dismount, and you could use the Arvak trick mentioned above to get it to stay put at your stable.

This is what I'm currently in progress of trying... In the meantime, I left Frost at my stable at Lakeview Manor, and no fast travelling for me... for a while....

If you're a ways out from getting Aardvark ( I can't help but call him that), IDK if it would work.... but... you could try to steal a horse, fast travel and see if Frost is spawned to your location. Then just dismount and let the stolen horse go on his way. That may disrupt the horse AI to not follow you around.
