Starting a new and want to ask which mods work bes

Post » Wed Aug 28, 2013 8:57 pm

Hi everybody.

I never played skyrim till the end,i stop playing it (not because i didnt like it, but i had no time) and gave it away. Now i rebought the game (bundle with all the dlc etc) from steam and wanted to start new.

The game remembered my old save game , but i didnt really like the melee thief i played ( dual sword doesnt really seem much fun in this game) and simply wanted to give it a new try form the beginning.

Well and here comes my question.

I would like to start fresh but with mods/addons. Not something that changes too much (in a sense that for example its a game changing mod that you would only play after you played through the whole game already as it replaces whole areas or quests or whatever etc) but helps gameplay wise to have more fun.

For example i know there is a mod for the Computer to have better menu controls.

Also a mod that just adds new 3d textures to stuff that is otherwise 2D.

What else is good to boost the fun? Or maybe there is a melee mod that make melee fighting more fun? or a mod with more armor/weapon items to chose from, maybe with different sets ( i remember that i thought that they could have been more different sets/items overall to chose from)? Or some unofficial mods that are helpful cause they make the game more bugfree?

For example i read about a mod that gives fun magic skills, like a swarm of spider and other things. I would love to have that too, but i dont want it to be too easy tho, not that i just spam imba spells and have once again 100000 ingredients in my bag and dont use them as there is no need.

Or i saw a mod that changes the skill trees and give more freedom etc, but i still want this to be a serious play through, and not mods to mess around for fun. If it changes the basics for the better, im down with it, but if it adds cars or a"onehit kill everything" weapon , or lets you skill everything you want and whenever you want, thats not my thing. The point is i find it kinda hard while reading through all these mod sites and all these "top 10 mods for skyrim sites" whats really worth the shot or not and i hoped to get some help from pros .

So basically tl:dr. Want start new, looking before i start for mods that will boost my pleasure without giving too much away or making it unbalanced.

I would love to hear some ideas and what you personally loved in terms of mods etc.

Thanks

First, I would like to welcome you to the forums. There is a seperate mod forum that would better serve your inquiry. Hit the "report" button, below your avatar and ask a moderator to move it to that forum.

Then I would suggest you become familiar with mods, their structure, how they are installed and managed. There is a lot of info out there. You need to familiarise yourself with management and associated tools, like...

NMM

Wrye bash, for the CPU enthusiast

BOSS

TES5Edit

SKSE

Before all else, I'd recommend the http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19/, and the Unofficial Patches for http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25127/, http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/23491/ and http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/31083/. They won't change your game noticeably, but they will eliminate a bunch of bugs and glitches from the game. Do make sure you read the patch notes (you can find the links on their respective pages), because they do make some other tweaks to the game and you'll want to know exactly what they changed.

If you want to keep to a minimum and be as close to vanilla as possible :

i'd use bethesda high res textures coupled with skyrim hd textures lite mod , pure waters mod , distant animated water falls mod , all the unoffical patches , amindian born book of silence ( default weapon retextured ) coupled with BSW (better shaped weapons ) , amazing follower tweaks mod , immersive patrols mod , immersive weapons and armors , Falskaar and Helgen reborn , and if you don't play with a controller the SKYUI mod is a must have IMO

Basically , you'll have a much better looking Skyrim without losing much in performances , really nice weapons and armours , follower system incomparably better and random encounters in the world more frequent , a new island/questlines and a PC user friendly interface

You can add a lot more mods afterwards , but i'd start there if i had not played Skyrim since a long time personally , then perhaps add more mods as you play if you feel the need for others

Why discourage him?

I use a controller and SkyUI works perfectly fine.

Ohhh  i didn't mean to discourage him , it's just that i don't use it cause i find the default interface optimized for consoles and since i use a controller now and keep my inventory/favourites to a minimum at all times (i sell or store in chests like a maniac , can't help it  ) i find the default one fine , but yeah SKYUI is definetely one of the most popular and useful mod out there , no doubt

Yeah these are some very nice ideas, also the idea with the unofficial patch. Its basically what i was looking for. And yeah, i have unfortunately no controller so ill get the other UI. I guess i will still look for a addon that has more items/sets for me and then just start with what you told me. If anyone got other ideas, or wants to share what they think is the best, i would be happy to read them.
And ill report it so the thread will be in the right subforum. As i wasnt really talking about specific mods or about how to install them, or why they might not work etc, i thought it might be smarter to keep this rather general discussion in a general topic. Sry for that

Before you start, it is highly advised you have the basic understanding of what they do, what folder they are installed in and how to properly manage them. As well as read and understand all of the ReadMe information provided by the mod author.

Creating that foundation of managing skills is absolute in using mods to both their full potential and better yet, avoiding massive conflicts and utterly rendering your savefile unplayable.

Simply installing on a whim, as what you think you want is ill advised and poor management practices.

Oh i will, dont be afraid, im not a total beginner when it comes down to this,im using computers for almost 20 years now and modded (or rather helped ppl with their stuff) myself 10 years ago in different games. Im far from being an IT professional, but i'll handle to install mods on skyrim without getting the game killed, so fear not :) . And i also never said that i want to install them on a whim, why would you think that?

SIr, go directly to Gophervids on You Tube and look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxQ1JN_X-_Y&list=PLE7DlYarj-DdhDG41roBVJfNCqvO5MmKP

You won't regret it.

P.S. I'm not Gophervids
