Combat system was never impressive in any TES game. However, I can say I enjoyed it more in Skyrim compared to previous TES games.

Playing Oblivion again for a bit. Combat svcks way worse than Skyrim. I honestly hate fighting things in Oblivion more than in Skyrim and even Morrowind. Every character I play just sneaks around.
I've never had a problem with the physical reach of weapons in Skyrim unlike some gamers...
Only problem I have with combat is how all it is is standing around and spamming the left-mouse key.
Thank the Game Gods for Mods.
Using magic in one hand and a weapon in the other vaguely reminds me of BioShock.
That's not a bad thing, although they could use a bit more variety in the weapons department. As in, more weapon types like shortswords and spears.
Bethesda did add spear-like weapons just for fun to see how they would fair in-game.
They did well, but Bethesda did not officially add them to the game...
Silly Bethesda.
You been playing Dark Souls?
But you do make a strong point, more special attacks would have been very useful.
It was in Morrowind. Moving different directions caused different attacks, which each attack causing either more or less damage depending on the weapon you're using (for example, a katana did more damage while slashing, but very little thrusting damage considering the shape of the blade). I definitely believe something similar should return. Would actually make weapons very different from each other. One sword better at one attack, another sword better at another. Add some variation back into the weapons.
It could use a little tweaking...going up against a mob and just watching it spam attack me as i block gets kinda old. Have to Fus or stun them to get an attack in, or attack them first and stagget them. Didnt Morrowind or Oblivion stagger when you tried to power attack and it got blocked?
Anyways those are just minor things...my main issue is with follower combat. I guess this is a new trend with games nowadays where they have a companion or follower system. MMOs like SWTOR, and i think KOTOR and ME had this system. I am ok with the follower system, but the AI needs a lot of work.
-killing a mob and looking over to see Lydia standing there doing nothing (not even shooting arrows)
-shooting their bow when i would rather have them in melee, or going melee instead of using their bow (IE flying dragon)
-getting stuck in doorways as i engage a mob
-stopping 50 feet short of the mob as i engage
-general AI behavior like being slow to start moving, which ends up with them falling way behind and leaving me by myself
-stacking on top of me even as i am trying to circle strafe around the mob to give them room...
Partially agreed. Though Skyrim's magic system is vastly superior for a pure mage, Oblivion made spellswords much more fun to play. I wish it was the other way around though, I prefer playing a spellsword in Skyrim while I like rolling mages in Morrowind and Oblivion.
combat of skyrim is good in my opinion its the enemy AI that could be improved and also about the weapons reach part i dont think there is any problem with weapons exceeding their visual reach the game would be too easy then you can just dodge or back away and avoid 100% of damage. armors and perks will then be pretty useless
The variations of armor is already quite useless as it is with the easily exploited improvement system.
Skyrim combat is nothing like Mount & Blade where you have directional attacks and can fake, not to mention speed and reach differences that are very meaningful in weapons. One thing I don't like about the Skyrim combat vs. Oblivion is that shield blocks no longer seem to stagger the attacker for a second like it did in Oblivion. In Skyrim, there's really no reason not to keep on attacking and go all offensive. In Oblivion, if your attack got blocked, then the opponent would have a chance to attack you, and usually get a clean hit before you could recover. This natural defense to offense to defense mechanism gives combat meaning, unlike the attack attack attack style of Skyrim. This is the biggest drawback to Skyrim and it's pretty big.
I'm glad that power attacks have been improved to make them useful and viable. Plus enemies seem to move more fluidly, and faster so that they can keep up with you. Can't just swing, move back to avoid attack, swing swing, move back to avoid attack like you did with Oblivion. Still there needs to be something that breaks up the attack so that constantly attacking won't work. Skyrim really lacks that crucial aspect.
Theirs always mods for that...
But unfortunately console users drew the short straw.
