Skyrim's forceful MQ

Post » Sun Sep 08, 2013 9:19 am

This was one of the worst parts of Skyrim....the MQ. It forces you to be this ancient Nord hero even if you're an Altmer who despises all Nords or a Redguard that has nothing to do with Skyrim. At least in Oblivion the MQ applied to every race but in Skyrim it pretty much forgets about the other races and just assumes that your charcter's a Nord. And let's face it, an Argonian dragonborn is putting it bluntly, fkin dumb. I would really have liked a story that would've applied to all races.

Also, after saving the world you get nothing and aren't recognised by anyone but a few guards every two weeks. If we were actually going to be this amazing saviour of humankind...at least get a few people to recognise us eh Beth? However, I think we shouldn't have even been an ancient hero in the first place. The game wasn't capable of giving the title any meaning and so therefore we should have been a helper or a shield-brother instead.

Hopefully in the next TES they won't coax you in to becoming a Nord or Imperial to complete the MQ without feeling odd and won't make you a fabled hero that just fades away in to darkness after an epic battle with a world eater.

But this thread isn't about the next TES. What did you people think of this?

I feel exactly like you do. I also wish that in the future, you don't have to "feel forced" to play as one race over another. I've already stated before that IMO, only a Nord should do the MQ.

While I don't think it is impossibly to play the way you want to due to the MQ, I do admit that it can be really difficult.
It's something which always annoys me in games which say that you're basically choosing your own adventure. There should be more freedom to do so for those among us who are a little particular about how things fit together.

It could have been done better but I think the effort was great.

Honestly with all the quests out there, why did we even need an MQ?

Sure sure we arrived by wagon, were about to be killed by the executioner and who shows up but Alduin to "save the day" But we could have gotten a different intro.

Why is it that when I want to do the Civil War quest, I need to start the MQ?

Why is it that when I then decide to finish the MQ I am forced into joining the college of Winterhold?

For as much freedom we were told of, that allowed us to pick who we really wanted to be... Why is so much forced on us?

Now granted, Skyrim is probably about the most "free to do as you please" game I have ever played. And Skryim to this date is the only game I've ever played this long (almost every day since 11/11/11)

I think the MQ should have been just as much an option to complete as say, joining the companions.

It still had much greater depth and choosability then basically all other RPG's. People seem to forget most RPG's do not have this much freedom to begin with. Also, Morrowind had a similar thing with their main quest and you never hear people complain about that. People should be happy it has as much freedom as it does, and stop complaining about what it does not have.

I must disagree with you at one point:

Being "Dragonborn" has little to nothing to do with being a Nord... I mean, the Majority of the Septims were either Breton or Imperial, and they were Dragonborn (as proved by the fact only they could light the Dragonfires, as such the Dragonfires became the ritual of Coronation...)

being Dragonborn is not being a "Nordic Hero". Many other societies have legends of Dragonborn..

Heck, we have reports that Tiber Septim (one of the most well know Dragonborns) was actually a Breton...

Dragonborn are not really "Heroes of the Nords", they are "Heroes of Man"...

that Aside I do find the MQ Forceful,

mostly because you need to do it to start the CW, to get a house in Whiterun. and the fact the MQ forces you to the College of Winterhold, thieves Guild, etc...

you should never hjave to join a Guild to progress through another Questline, or start a questline to progress in a guild

Although I do not have this problem while playing as a difference race, I can see the issue for others. I agree that a lot of what you do, people never seem to notice. Eh, I just found nearly everything about Skyrim's MQ disappointing.

I have no problem being a Breton dragonborn but I can see for other races why it would bother people. My favorite races are Breton, Nord and Wood Elf, and indeed I never did the main quest with a Wood Elf.

Whether it DOES have more freedom shouldn't matter; if you feel something can be improved then you should be able to vocalise that opinion without people basically telling you to "svck it up".
This is about as useful as saying "I'd like to see you do any better!!!"

Perhaps Morrowind's MQ is considered more interesting or better placed. However, I highly doubt that there aren't a good few people who dislike it.

Agree completely with this. I understand the Province's MQ dealing with... the province. That's to be expected(obviously) and there's nothing wrong with that. But that doesn't mean they have to TIE our player character intrinsically into their culture.

Having to be the Chosen One - explicitly - is bad for RP. It can be argued that the CoC was also a chosen one, but, it can also be argued against it. It isn't blatant, nor it is FORCED. You are merely destined to play a part. The CoC could achieve power not because he was Divine, but because you could earn it. As the real hero was Martin.

But the wonderful ambiguity of the CoC, you could easily RP that you were the Chosen One(Shezzarine). This is ideal because both sides win. I can play a believable non-chosen one, just as easily as I can RP that I am the Chosen One. Both are equally viable. And best of all, since you aren't some explicit hero of man, other races felt equal.

It only got shoddy with Knights of the Nine though, but even that can be worked around with some research and head-canon.
