Help with my Rōnin character.

Post » Mon Sep 09, 2013 8:29 am

I've decided to make my new Skyrim character a Redguard Rōnin named Musashi. I plan to roleplay him by traveling around to different towns to look for freelance work before getting caught up into different conflicts through out his life.

The problem through is I don't know what kind of armor to wear, I'm just wearing a novice robe at the moment. And I also don't know between one handed or two handed weapons. I'd like to use the ebony blade but its so glitchy and I can't get the patch. The real Musashi Miyamoto was famous for pioneering the dual wielding of katanas, anyone know where I could find some early on? Could anyone tell me how the unpatched ebony blade works or should I just skip it and use one handed weapons?

Also any other role playing tips you could think of for a Rōnin?

I would skip over the ebony blade. Apparently it's still glitched. What type of combat style are you planning? That would help us better help you with armor type and the such.

I hear the ebony blade uses the one handed perks but levels up the two handed skills.

I wanted to use light armor but I couldn't think of anything that would look Samurai/Rōnin like.

Blades armor, Blades armor, Blades armor.

Also, if you're on PC, http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/41731//?.

Xbox unfortunately, my computer couldn't run it.
Isn't blade armor heavy?

Yep, but without mods, it's the most ronin-ish I can think of...

Just change your perks' choice to heavy :P

Well I found Bolars Oathblade and now I'm just looking for armor. I want to use heavy but I just don't think it would really be in character with his wondering nature.

Does it really matter? It's armor. It protects. It's inspired by samurai style. It's perfect.

Ebony Blade should work fine now. But you'll have to consider your character's morality for the role-play.

It's been patched, it's a 2 hand that works like any other now.

If you're going Musashi then use a wooden sword and show your true skills

As others have said Blades Armor and maybe Banded Iron Armor (just the body) feels the most similar to samurai armor

I only have the unpatched version of the game because of my lack of Xbox Live :/
On a slightly unrelated note, Haggar have you read Musashi?

If you still only have the Oathblade and are wanting to dual wield, on the PC version when you follow Delphine into her Riverwood hideout there is an unenchanted Blade sword hanging on one of the weapon stands. I'm guessing XBOX stuff is similar so maybe you can check in there too.

Armor is another thing though...not sure if you are going for an armored look, half-armored look or the full kimono look. I used to play Samurai Shodown 1 and 2, and i liked the way Yagyu Jubei dressed. Thats kinda what i picture when i hear about your wandering ronin. Its gonna be hard though since there isnt a separate leg or chest armor. Probably hide bracers, sandals (dont know where you can find it on Xbox though). None of the robes i've seen have the double flap in the front, just the single flap. For regular clothes there is the "Fine Clothes, which has a quilted looking outer garment with a double flap. For armor i was looking for a chestpiece that looks like the chestpiece on common samurai armor, but i couldnt find anything. The Dawnguard armor looks like some of the "Christianized" samurai armor i've seen. And because of Skyrim armor being combined chest+leg some of the chestpieces that could pass for a samurai chestpiece are ruined because they have the crappy leg flaps (steel plated armor for example).
