Why is the one Tamrielic language so dominant?

I have a few questions about different languages, I know from a gameplay point of view, it's much easier if everyone just uses the language the player set for themselves but how is this explained by lore? I understood that the language spoken by the vast majority of the Elder scrolls characters is the language brought in by the Empire and Talos and is therefore a developed form of Colovian, so what happened to all the other languages? why do you not meet a single character in Morrowind who struggles with their second language? even the Ashlanders who live in Vvardenfell, a land which for thousands of years has been the main seat of the Tribunal Temple. It seems they have sent enough traders and explorers to their tribes for them to forget their native language but not a single missionary? Is Dunmeris really as much of a dead language as it seems?

As for Skyrim, I use an Elder scroll to open a rip in time allowing me to see into the late Merithic era, and somehow, the first Nords are speaking modern Colovian/Tamrielic?

Edit: Forgot to add the question, how will Ender Scrolls Online handle language?
