Jacobstown = practice for Skyrim?

I think it depends on why you're playing really and what kind of experience you're looking for.

Man, I think the north of Oblivion looked better. Also what the Donner party said.

New Vegas looks far better than that, it looks like these screenshots were taken on low settings.

Another thing i think to mention is that the Oblivion version of their engine has a better emphasis on grass/foliage. Obviously Fallout doesn't need great foliage, as opposed to Oblivion's forests.

I have taken some new screenshots of the area in case anyone was curious:

Fixed the links, the image host didn't like the images being over 3MB each and so had to reduce the resolution...

No, just no! Ugh, Jacobstown was by far the worst settlement in New Vegas, the poorly crafted terrain and snow mixed with the horrible textures and ugly trees killed it.

I think Solstheim is the best to describe, experience and see how Skyrim will look like, just with better graphics.

Btw, commander your last screens links are broken.

Thoughts? (p.s. ignore the robotic dog, lol)

Yeah, actually. Reduce the file sizes. Who takes and shares 48 bit png screenshots?

The only reference from New Vegas I'm hoping to see in Skyrim is nice, hand-modelled trees using the old Morrowind approach of textured leaf planes. Speedtree looks like crap, honestly - the leaves don't light properly, they'rre jagged, and the fog doesn't blend with them too well either.

Jeez guys. It's called turning the graphics settings down. FO:NV looks way better than that on my system. Even if it's not practice for Skyrim, at least it's a well thought out thread that doesn't talk about what should be changed/included/removed/nerfed from prior games.

Skyrim is being developed by Bethesda Game Studios while New Vegas was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Both games are being published by Bethesda Softworks but they have different developement teams on opposite sides of the country.

And I thank god for that

I hope it looks a lot better than anything in FO:NV. I've got it, and even with graphics set at the Ultra level, I still think the whole thing looks pretty bad by today's gaming standards. I can't say that it ruins the game for me, close, but it doesn't do it any favors.

And for that reason, I hope nothing at all in Skyrim remotely reminds me of FO or I'm going to be highly disappointed. With a different dev team than NV and a new engine taking advantage of today's technology, I doubt that it will, and I guess we'll know within a couple weeks, but I'm still having nightmares. Seriously. I had a dream not long ago that I was playing NV but I had a sword, and it was Skyrim. I woke up in a cold sweat. Even worse, I had another dream that I was playing Skyrim, and the graphics were [enter buzzword] stylized. I woke up projectile vomiting. It wasn't pretty, in any sense of the word. :o

Yeah... Frankly if Skyrim looks anything like Oblivion, Fallout 3, or Fallout New Vegas, it will fail graphically... New RPG's that have release dates before TES V already have demonstrated far better graphics including on the console, and failure to at least meet these standards would be falling short of expectations for Bethesda... Though honestly, if they said screw the graphics and just worked on gameplay the entire time and it looked like Morrowind, I really wouldn't complain.

Oblivion's wilderness looked way better than NV's.

No, no, and no again. Obsidian entertainment developed Fallout New Vegas and Bethesda GAME Studious are developing Skyrim. They also developed Fallout 3, and all previous Elder Scrolls games. (maybe not the mobile ones. Never played them) Bethesda Softworks, a different company published all the aforementioned games.

I also think part of the confusion comes from people not paying attention and Bethesda Softworks not having the game developer on the front of the game box like most game devs are. Only on the back.

Also when you start NV it first says 'Bethesda Softworks' before it says 'Obsidian Entertainment'. But on my PC the main menu finishes loading before the Obsidian logo even has a chance to appear. :P
