Learning new skills from scratch.

So I've been playing Morrowind again. This is my third time I'm trying to get to the game and I started a character whose skills I chose mostly without knowing what I actually need.

I got Axe, Destru, Resto, Alte, Illu and Enchant as main skills.

Axe is very nice and I like it, and I chose it because I hear Nerevar favored axes. I like the way I can kill a lot of stuff with one hit.

But then I did that one quest in Vivec where I directed that actor dude to serve Crassius Curo, and for that I got a spear from that Argonian enchanter. I immediately fell in love with spears (I'm a fan of polearms in general) but my Spear skill is only 5. I'm a dunmer at level 2 and I have 6k gold.

I don't want to start over because starting over constantly is what made me lost interest before, but I want to use both spears and axes. Is it possible or is it too late?

Its never too late. You just have to suffer the low skill level for a bit.

Training skills at that level is dirt cheap in vanilla Morrowind. It will allow you to skip most of the tedious leveling part for a small fee.

If your Agility is decent, it should be doable. If that's low, then I'd recommend paid training at least to a skill of 10-15, to avoid the frustration. By level 20-40, it should actually start becoming useful, and beyond that you start discovering just how effective Spears can be for fighting while taking no damage in return.

My recommendation would be: against tough adversaries, stick with the Axe for now, and use the Spear for hunting weak vermin and stuff until you're good with it. Axe for war, Spear for hunting. I use both Necessities of Morrowind and Abot's Waterlife, so hunting crabs and spearfishing are both important reasons to use a Spear as a secondary weapon. Most of my characters use a different weapon for fighting, as a primary. In several cases, Spear has been a Miscellaneous skill, but I've self-trained it into a very usable skill in almost every game.

It's fairly easy to get a combat/armor skill up to a usable level if you're patient and willing to endure some painfully long and tedious combats with weak enemies you'd normally stomp on with your main fighting skills. Use the spear vs negligible threats such as mudcrabs and cliffracers once you build up your levels a bit and/or have some reliable means of healing such as enchanted items or some good potions. You'll miss a lot of course but the skill will build up quickly enough at those low levels and all the while you'll be training other skills such as your armor, repair, and perhaps magical skills as well.

Something I forgot this morning: Find or make an item enchanted with Bound Spear. Bam, +10 spear skill right there.
