Who's there? [Goodbye]

Post » Sat Sep 14, 2013 7:00 pm

That's the greeting I'm getting with about 10% of the NPCs in the Vivec Foreign Quarter. I tried taking all my character's clothes off to see if I could circumvent it, but nothing. Don't laugh. I can't even get them to greet me properly if they turn around and say hello, so they are detecting me. In fact, I checked GetDetected on those NPCs in the console and it's returning 1. I haven't actually played the game in so long I haven't experienced this bug before. I figured it's a mod conflict or load order problem. Here's my load list:

Nudity Greeting and PRE could be conflicting even though they are made by the same author. Perhaps load order could fix that.

You have no Bashed Patch, since these work from leveled lists, that could be the other reason.

Some time ago, Abot's Gondoliers caused that problem but I think it was fixed in a later update. Check to see if you have the latest version.

You mean the Mashed Lists.esp for the leveled list, but the bashed patch only exist in Wrye Bash for both Oblivion and Skyrim.

Of course I don't know if there is a bashed patch in Wrye Flash for FO3.

This seems the mostly likely culprit, but is there a later version than 1.7? Because that's the one I'm using and the only one I can find. Also, there's no mention of a fix in the 1.7 changelog.

Abot shows 1.7 as the latest version on http://abitoftaste.altervista.org/morrowind/index.php?option=downloads&task=info&id=14&Itemid=50.

Girl! For a half a second I thought this was a "goodbye thread"!

I'm almost certain it's a dialog filter issue in one of the mods. Uncheck the bottom half of your load list and see if the problem is corrected. If it is, uncheck half of those and continue until the problem comes back. Likewise for the first half if the issue isn't fixed by the first "halving". Look specifically for dialog-heavy mods.

it should have been fixed since version 1.1 (- invisibility effect removing fixed)
There is a easy way to see if the problem may be related to one of my transport mods: open the game console and type
player->GetInvisible, it should be 0 when not traveling.
In case it is different than 0,
type
player->SetInvisible 0
to fix it,
and please report to me last transport operator you talked to.

Thank you so much for this info. The last operator I talked to was actually the siltstrider guy from Seyda Neen. I didn't talk to a gondolier at all in this game yet. I hope that helps. I'll try checking the player's invisible status in the console.

This is getting really aggravating. I did a GetInvisible check, and it's returning 0. I tried unloading Gondoliers, and no change, so it's not abot's mods. It's not just in Vivec either. It seems to be any NPC that doesn't have noLore. Someone has removed the GetDetected check from that greeting and I can't find which mod it is. I've been systematically opening every one that has anything to do with dialogue, and I cannot find which mod [censored] this greeting up.

Not only that, but some mod has botched up the "Black Jinx" dialogue so the only response I get from anyone is, "That's none of your business, %PCName." And I can't find which mod [censored] that one up either. Isn't there a better a better way to check dialogue conflicts than loading/unloading mods and testing them over and over and over? It's like searching for a needle in a haystack. I've been at this ALL DAY.

I fixed the Black Jinx [censored] with a mini-patch mod, but it's not working for that damned greeting, and that's the one breaking the game so I can't talk to certain NPCs. What the hell?

You could do a search of all esps/esms in your datafiles dir for keywords using a grep program such as http://download.cnet.com/TextCrawler/3000-2352_4-10805637.html. I use it on occasion to see what mods fiddle with some things.

Edit: Make sure you set the file filter box to:
*.es?
to make sure it searches all esps/esms.

Edit 2: Another option that takes a bit more effort would be to run http://code.google.com/p/mlox/wiki/Tes3cmd#diff_-_Report_differences_between_two_plugins comparing each mod to say MW.esm (or whatever the applicable esm is that has the original content you are seeking changes of) and then using http://winmerge.org/downloads/ to compare the resulting text files to see what the exact differences are. I tend to do the Textcrawler thing first to get an idea what mods I need to look at, then do this step. this is the batch file I use to do that with and just change file names as necessary:

@echo offtes3cmd diff --not-equal "Clean Official Plugins v1.1.esp" "Clean OfficialMods_v5.1.esp" %1 >> tes3diff.log 2>&1type tes3diff.logpause
NOTE: I do clean both plugins ahead of time before doing this step with Tes3cmd as well to minimize difference results.

Thanks, SH. I just finished a manual search for "Who's there?" in every single mod I have loaded, by hand. The only errant entry was in BetterClothes1.1 (why?). I deleted the entry with EE and loaded the "patched" version. No change. The only other mod that adds a greeting the "Who's there?" is TR, but they seem to be all filtered. I'll see what I can do with this utility.

Sounds then like a conflict with LGNPC - nolore. Turn that one off and see if your greetings come back. If they do, put it back and move it below New Voices in your load order.

I had a number of mods that gave back results for Who's there? using textcrawler, interestingly none of the LGNPC mods were in those results.

Nope. I found the problem. It's Tamriel Rebuilt. Here's why I didn't find it after hours of searching -- because the problem is it isn't there. It's supposed to be under the "failed your oath of silence" greeting, but TR REMOVES the entry. I checked under all the TR entries, but it's not there. When I loaded TR along with the official esms in the CS, that entry was GONE. It's been deleted somehow, which causes it to show up in a buggy form? I don't know. I'm completely stumped on how it managed to [censored] that greeting up so badly. I unloaded TR and that fixed the problem.

So, how the hell do I fix a dirty esm problem? How can I make a temp fix for TR?

You could just go in with EE and get rid of the entry that removes it I would think.

I guess I'm going to have to search for the number of the entry in case the text has been altered. Here goes ...

Btw, the "Black Jinx" problem is not TR. Still investigating that one.

Is the original entry (the "failed your oath of silence" greeting) from the vanilla quest or is it added by another mod?

It's vanilla MW. That's at the top of Greeting 1, always, for that Tribunal Temple quest where you have to walk across Vvardenfell without speaking to anyone. The "Who's there?" Greeting has always been right below that one, and checks for both the "noLore" variable, and the GetDetected Function. With the TR esms loaded, the latter is missing.

Edit: Bloodmoon alters the "Who's there?" greeting. TR just duplicated it in their esm for some reason. But removing it doesn't help. See below.

"Who's there?" : IIRC Bloodmoon added an NPC ID condition to that entry (bug or fix?) meaning you wouldn't get it anymore from generic NPCs; some mods and patches ('official unofficial patch' or 'patch project', whichever it's called these days) removed that condition again. I think some mods even add it as a Greeting 0.

Problem with "Who's there?" is it can mess up quests that rely on (force/)greetings. Also, the NPCs' detection very easily bugs out and it seems you mostly get that greeting when you're not supposed to. Might be system/... dependent. Either way, it's more trouble than it's worth, so AFAIK it was *edited* again in TR to make sure any patch of the NPC ID condition (ulfgar the unending) would get overwritten back to the Bloodmoon state.

It's not right under "failed your oath of silence" for me, but a dozen entries below it (with vanilla+Tribunal+Bloodmoon),

and when I load both the TR_Mainland and TR_Data esms in the CS, it's still there...?

Quick list of possible problem mods fer yas that came back on a Black Jinx search of my data files dir (files I have that you have as well)

LGNPC_NoLore_v0_83.esp
Morrowind Patch 1.6.5 Beta (BTB Edit).esm
TR_Data.esm
Unique Jewelry and Accessories.esp
UniqueFinery.esp

LGNPC_NoLore_v0_83.esp show an rDIAL entry for Black Jinx so that is likely the best bet as the problem mod.

Yeah, I already looked at that one. What I don't get is they added some noLore checks and stuff to the bottom entries, but did not touch the entries above, and it's all the entries above that are failing to show up.

Edit: This is the dirty entry for "Who's there?": 1215227585220936854. It's in TR_data.esm, not mainland.

Edit2: Cleaning that entry in EE did not help. Yet it's only unloading TR that fixes it. I don't get it. I've cleaned it out of everything. It doesn't exist in anything but Bloodmoon anymore. I'm done. I give up. :(

When you load only TR and the official esms in the CS, are you sure "Who's there?" actually disappears? Because it really shouldn't.

I don't know why it'd usually be at a different position for you (using a non-standard Morrowind.esm maybe?) but you can find out whether it's still there using "Edit->Find text".
