Quick hearthfire question

Post » Sun Sep 15, 2013 3:43 pm

My character is probably going to marry Sondas Drenim, the dark Elf who lives at Darkwater Crossing, but she also wants to adopt Hrefna since Sondas is like a father to the kid. On the wiki, it says that one can adopt the girl if Tomir, the mother, and Sondas are dead. Can I still adopt her if I marry Sondas?

Make a save and try it. If not then load it.

Sorry but I don't know what else to suggest.

I would doubt it, since the mechanic that renders a kid adoptable probably requires that their parents be dead to activate.

Also, the adoptability mechanic for children orphaned in-game has been mentioned to have a few bugs in it, while I haven't seen any with Honorhall or Hearthfire kids.

If you play on PC, this might be an option. Taken from: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim_talk:Child#Setting_children_as_adoptable_with_the_console

If that Elf is considered the father figure of the girl, you might have to kill him to even adopt the girl.

I don't think its worth it.

I don't go around orphaning kids anyway. Just goes against my grain.

Wouldn't it be even easier just to kill her, adopt the child, then resurrect via console? :D

Unfortunaly, I'm on xbox :/ but thanks anyways.
When Sondas will ask my character where they want to live, she'll just answer 'darkwater crossing'. I'm going to pretend that we adopted Hrefna.
Thanks for trying everyone!

Im pretty sure Sondas lives outdoors in a tent... im not entirely sure, maybe someone here can verify that. pretty positve though that there is no 'home' you can move into in darkwater crossing

Sylgja on the other hand has a decent modest home to move into if married :)

No, Sondas has no property at all. Which begs the question, what if a PC that has no property marries an NPC who also has no property? How does that conversation go after the wedding? I need to try that sometime.

Edited to add - I use the word "property" rather than house, because sometimes NPC's have a bed at an inn or faction house that counts as property in this context. Sondas doesn't even have an owned bed that's considered property, which I guess is why if you visit DC enough, you'll see that the bedrolls don't belong to specific people - they can sleep on them but they aren't owned. I've slept there a time or two myself.

I don't have any properties, so I'll try to get married before I get a house to see what happens.

so to clarify if you marry Sondas without a home yourself, you can move in with him and share his bedroll, is that right?

Well, no. What I was getting at is - it's not even his bedroll. It isn't owned by him. Anyone can sleep there, provided you haven't made enemies of the soldiers there. Yes, you can sleep in it, but not because it's his. I just happened to be there at night so I slept there when I noticed i could.

Generally if an NPC has no property at all, the only option is to live at the PC's home. That's why I'm curious about what will happen if a PC with no home marries a NPC with no property.

I'm going to check a few things in the CK and then edit this post.

The male beggar in Windhelm can be married. He has nothing.

I know. That's why I was curious. I looked in the CK and there's no particular dialog for this situation. But it seems these NPCs with no owned bed have packages to sleep in any available bed in their sandbox area. The beds at DC are unowned. Cinalu can confirm it later, but I suspect there will be the "you can stay with me" option, but it will just mean "you can hang out where I already sleep".

So, techincally, that would mean, yes, Cinalu's character can "live" at Darkwater Crossing, with the post-marriage dialog to support it, and sleep in any bedroll that someone else isn't using at the moment. It's not ideal, and would take some effort to store things safely nearby, but for RP purposes it should work.

Well, provided you don't start the Civil War on the side of the Imperials. The soldiers at DC don't like that. I found that out the hard way. I got one trespassing warning then boom! Everyone attacked me. It was my first ever visit to DC, I didn't know it was occupied by the Stormcloaks. :D
