Steam Cloud saved games

Post » Wed Sep 18, 2013 2:23 am

Hello.

I have two computer that both have Skyrim installed via Steam. Today when I was about to play Skyrim I was only at level 8 and way back in the storyline, but normally I'm level 16. A window showed up when I tried to start Skyrim that said that the steam cloud could not synchronize with the saved games or whatever. And that is exactly what happened. I started at level 8 when I'm really at level 16.

What can I do to fix this? I don't really feel like starting over from level 8...

I don't think the Steam Cloud really works that well for these games. I have never used it as it would never be in synch with the saves I wanted to use.

So, how to get around this, use a USB stick and move your saves over to the other machine.

Yeah, I've had some issues with Steam Cloud syncing, especially with Oblivion.

Yea. That's what I thought... You kind of expect it to be working. Is there really no other way? Feels like alot of trouble just to be able to play saved games on a different computer. Thanks for the reply none the less. Anyone else have other suggestions?

Here is the thing with Synced Saves. In most games, save files are around a MB or so in size, and not much changes in the save, other than equipment and way-point coordinates and stats. In Skyrim, the saves can grow to be as large as 15 to 20MB, as everything done in the game creates save data (leaving a door open for instance). With Autosaves being created just about every minute or two, there are so many ways that a Cloud sync would get messed up. I don't know how fast your Internet would upload a 20 MB save file, but it's probably slower than the next Autosave trigger.

The Steam Cloud was used for a while, then it was disabled simply because people were losing progress in the game by getting a mis-synced save. It got to be so bad, that the feature was disabled on the Steam Side for the entire game. I am quite surprised they even brought it back. I would never use it, even if it worked better.

You say that using a USB stick to move saves around sounds kind of complex and cumbersome. Compared to recreating the last several hours of work in the game, it's nothing. Especially once your more recent save gets overwritten by an older cloud save.

Okay. I'll see if I going to get a USB stick for my saved games. Still think it should work but well, you can't have everything :). Thanks for the long & well writtem reply. Now I understand it better.
