Fixing corruption after lowering uGrids setting?

Post » Tue Oct 01, 2013 12:10 pm

I knew that increasing the uGrids setting, as described in a Nvidia tweaks page, would corrupt any newly made save files if I were to switch back to uGrids 5. However, after playing with uGrids 7 for about an hour I decided to go back and, as expected, the saves have been corrupted.

I would just like to know if it is at all possible to fix this, or will I just have to go back an hour of gameplay? Thanks in advance.

That damn NV guide again...

Have you done anything important in that one hour that you're not okay with losing? It may be easier just to revert.

For anyone else reading... The nVidia guide that says it's okay to tweek the uGrids setting is wrong. Do not fiddle with uGridsToLoad, leave it at 5. Even tweeking it to 7 will nearly double the number of exterior cells loaded, and that adds up as a massive burden on a game engine that just can't handle it. uGrids tweeking is Russian Roulette with your gamesaves, and you spin the metaphorical cylinder every time you load the game up with any setting greater than 5. And when you try to revert, you get the problems that DrSchloickerstein here is having.

Just out of interest, uGrids is modified in the ini settings right, if you never changed anything then the default is 5 right.
- if you never changed your ini settings for uGrids, how do you check if it really is at 5 because scanning my ini's the uGrids 'name' is not found anywhere.

Well I haven't done anything important in the one hour but preferably I wouldn't like to lose it so I just created this forum to see if there was anything I could try before continuing with my older saves.

And in reply to 'chuckos88', the default is definitely 5. I may be mistaken but I don't think there is a line in the ini file that refers to uGrids; you create it when you do the modification.

That's correct...i don't have that line either. !!!!

...maybe gamesass advice not to change it might not be so rubbish after all...

You can try this:

Start Skyrim and load up a saved game.

Use ALT+TAB to switch out of Skyrim and back to your Desktop.

Edit the Skyrim.ini file as normal, modifying the uGridsToLoad variable to the desired lower value. Save Skyrim.ini and close it.

Use ALT+TAB to switch back to Skyrim.

Open the Command Console using the tilde ~ key and type refreshini.

Save your game to a new save slot, and it should now have the correct new uGridsToLoad value.

It may also be wise to do that inside an interior cell.

Oh, and since you're a new forumgoer, DrSchloickerstein, this is obligatory...

Oh sorry I forgot to mention that I have already changed the value back to 5. I was looking for a possible solution to apply after the change was made.

you can try "my" solution to a save with uGrid=7 and see if it works !!!!

or even try to change uGridsToLoad=5 and uExteriorCellBuffer=36

Do what Mark says, it's the solution. :)

Don't forget to put back the ugridstoload value you had when you saved your game into your Skyrim.ini. The save knows that value only; after that do what Mark says in his first post.
