Dragonborn Reknown In Skyrim Well Represented?

Post » Wed Oct 02, 2013 4:23 pm

One of my favorite moments in Skyrim has always been when you first discover you are Dragonborn. The guards present at said event, address you as such & are in marvel & amazement. As they should be. As the game progresses however, no one seems to care. Certainly there are those amongst the main storyline that recognize your significance on occasion, but a vast majority of the time your daily interactions are basically:

"I'm not afraid of you! Even if you are my elder!"

"No Lollygaggin!"

"Hands to yourself sneakthief!"

"Takes a fair bit of strength to carry a greatsword like that. But can you use it?"

Whether it be townsfolk, innkeepers, guards etc, there are a ton of npcs that love to talk down to the player. Now, I don't expect everyone in town to get on their knees the moment I enter a town but...The Dragonborn is a demi-god of sorts. Would it be to much to ask?

If you were a simple citizen, going about your mundane daily tasks & a "DRAGONBORN" came into your proximity, wouldn't you go out of your way to gain an audience with said individual/show respect/attempt to establish a relationship with them? I'd wager that 99% of people would. Would you talk down to a person who can send you flying over a mountain with their voice? Probably not.

Do you feel the Dragonborn is shown the respect he/she deserves?

I don't think it's represented well but people showing to much respect or admiration could become very annoying. They just need to balance out Respect-Disrespect.

How would they know our character is the Dragonborn? Most citizens would know a Dragonborn *has* appeared but I doubt they would know what he/she looked like. It's conceivable that they they might have heard a generic description of race, height, hair color, ect. But even those generic descriptions could be discounted as undependable rumors. Personally, I think it would be very bizarre if the population in Skyrim were somehow able to psychically recognize my character on sight.

I also agree with Nelfarion that it could potentially get annoying. Morrowind's "E-e-e-excuse me, Nerevarine," got really annoying to me. And again, I felt it was rather immersion-breaking that they were able to recognize my character at all.

True, a player who wishes to conceal themselves should not be openly recognized. What about those running around in Dragonplate armor? Or those who have a habit of using shouts in town etc? I imagine word of mouth would travel fast in small communities once 1 person recognized you. The people of Whiterun for example should all know who you are for "undisclosed reasons". Carriage drivers would catch wind of it & within a short amount of time one would think all of Skyrim would know.

E....E...E...excuse me Nerevarine.

E....E...E...excuse me Nerevarine.

E....E...E...excuse me Nerevarine.

E....E...E...excuse me Nerevarine.

You really want more than that?

Ahaha well not exactly. Have you seen the movie 300? Do you recall the actions of the people of Sparta as Leonidas or the Queen walked amongst the people? They would nod graciously, move out of their way, smile while making eye contact etc as a sign of respect. Things of this nature. I'm not bashing Bethesda for this, I'm just saying it would add a great deal of immersion to the atmosphere. Half the time I am walking around I have to restrain myself from ripping peoples heads off.

"Have you been to the cloud district??"

"Ha...Of course you haven't"

I can see an Army of Bosmer following My character, half worshipers, half just looking for easy meals, all with Hershy Kiss Hair and torches in hand.

I would have enjoyed a little more recognition than Our character recieves in Skyrim.

Morrowind did go just a little too far with Nevarine Reverance.

Guards will give the player recognition every now and then, but every other npc in the game won't give a skeever's butt unless it has something directly to do with them.
