Opinions on tactics...

Hey folks I'm considering buying tactics (for the 2nd time but that's another story)

So I just wanted some opinions on:

How good is it?

How does it compare/differ to fallout 1 and 2?

Is the writing and story any good because that's a large chunk if not the main reason I play fallout games will it let me down in this aspect I.E minimal story mostly combat?

Thanks!

Edit: also is it wise getting it on steam or should I go the GOG avenue?

I've played it three times and every time I meet the super mutants I quit playing. It's fun up to that point but when the muties come around the gameplay suddenly jumps in difficulty to the point of absurdity and it stops being fun. I'm all for challenging gameplay where I need to think about my next move, but those [censored] super mutants are too damn difficult. Not saying it can't be done, cause it can, I'm saying that in order to succeed you need to play the game like a slug and move super-quietly and carefully plan just taking out 3 of the bastards (and there are over 50 in the first map) and the gameplay just crawls to a halt. Stop beign fun and becomes tedious.

But, up until that point I do enjoy the game, and maybe after the super mutants crap the game becomes fun again, however I have no interest in playing through several missions of absolute tedium when I would rather just play something else.

Is it good? IMO it is a good game.

How does it compare/differe to Fallout 1 and 2? Well Fallout Tactics is a Tactical Squad Based game in which you are given missions from command bunkers. As you complete missions you advance in the story, and expand to new bunkers and new missions. It is not an RPG. There is little in if any RPG mechanics, other then how well you finish the mission and there are four endings. You can have up to five squad mates and you control them as if they were your own character.

How is the writing: I would say it is good. But yeah it is a Tactical game, not an RPG. Combat is pretty much what it is about. Speech is useless.

Steam or GoG in this case shouldn't matter Fallout Tactics doesn't need any patches to run on windows 7, XP and so on as far as I know.

There is a real time option and I would suggest playing using that, it greatly speeds up the game play.

@Gabriel77Dan the super mutants can be very hard to fight, the main point of that mission is to get in and get out, not so much combat. That is why they tell you to not even bother fighting the fort. But given that you know what to expect, why not prepare for it? Have some heavy weapons people, a sniper and a good repair person.

It's a little bit different from FO1 and FO2. I didn't really enjoy it much but I never was into active tactical battle games like Tactics or XCOM. I had gotten Tactics from the bundle that had Fallouts 1 and 2 in it and it was a good deal, no DRM at all.
