Pro-empire or pro-rebels?

On one hand, I am always against the "conquerors" and "imperialists" in real life and always sympathize with the smaller nations that try to resist the "big sharks" and want to preserve their independence. On the other hand, if an empire already exists, and generations have passed, then in my opinion just accepting the status is a lesser evil because separation of provinces lead to war, violence and chaos even though the reason for it can theoretically be good (love for cultures that deserve to be free etc).

So what do you think about the conflict between the Empire and the rebel factions such as the Stormcloaks in Skyrim? Who is in the right in your opinion or, to put it better, which solution is the lesser evil?

Empires, historically (in my opinion) = bad. But the Cyrodiilic Empire would probably be the single kindest empire in history should they have existed on Earth. Besides them Alessians, but even then.. better than Rome.

Anyways.. ideal outcome for me is: Skyrim fights with the Empire against the Thalmor and does not lose any men to a rebellion. Once the Thalmor issue is taken care of Skyrim secedes to become it's own independent kingdom. If the Empire doesn't like it THEN they can go shove it.
