Companion behavior

I'm getting super fed up with stupid companion behavior to a point where I just won't take them with me anywhere, which is annoying cause I do like what they bring to the game. My playstyle is to keep them out of combat, or at least keep them behind me, not engaging the enemy until we're actually in combat. And there is a setting for that in the companion wheel: "Do not engage enemy until I have done so!" or something to that effect. However, they pretty much don't give a crap about that. I got Ed-E and Boone throwing themselves at enemies I have barely spotted and before I know it we're engaged in an all out battle with a group of Vipers, Boone is dead, I'm crippled while still trying to figure out which gun I'm holding and how many enemies are left, while Ed-E is off laser blasting some punk in the distance. What the hell just happened?! Boone, you [censored], you're a sniper and spotter! Just show me the target and I'll take them out from a distance and once they get close we will deal with the situation in close combat!

How on earth do I stop this idiotic behavior!? And why does the companion wheel not do what it says it will do?

Are they also set to Aggressive rather than Passive?

I use companions sparingly, and outside of needing them around in order to secure conditions for their quests, they spend most of their time in their room at the Underwater Hideout. I don't mind them going off and killing other things, that it what they are for. Besides, I still get the Experience.
