Install mods before or after Helgen

Post » Sat Oct 19, 2013 4:27 pm

Hi guys,

I know ideally mods should not be installed or uninstalled during a game, and I want to stick to this during my next character completely - I will download all the mods I am going to use, install them, and that is it.

I was just going to install everything right from the begining, then create my character, but I have heard that some mods can cause problems with the Helgen sequence, and that it is better to install mods afterwards. Wouldn't this go against not installing mid-save? When is the best time to install mods?

Cheers,

Kashaaz

I like to install all my mods before I even make a character, but that's because I use http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9557 so I don't go through Helgen much. But there are some mods that do cause problems if you load them before finishing Helgen (though they usually tell you so). To be on the safe side, you could load all your mods right after you exit the cave. Or just download LAL.

You must install all the Unofficial patches before starting a new game, if you want all the fixes to be active.

I play the prologue in Helgen only with the Unofficial patches, then I save right after I exit the cave, and then I install all the other mods I want to play with.

AFAIK there is no problem at all to install a mod at mid-game. What is strongly not recommended is to uninstall a mod mid-game. Once you install a mod, you must keep it forever for this playthrough if you want to avoid a lot of bugs.

Another recommendation for installing Live Another Life before starting a new game. Say goodbye to the Helgen sequence and all the mod conflicts that goes with it (not to mention the monotony). LAL is a fixture in my mods list.

The only mod of this kind I can think of at the moment is Helgen Reborn.

I enable all of my mods at the beginning of every game and have never encountered any problems.
