What Happens if Ulfric wins before starting MQ?

Post » Sat Oct 19, 2013 12:51 pm

I've started a new character, and I think my Nord is going to side with Ulfric. I was wondering what would happen if I skipped going to Whiterun altogether and started doing the Civil War quests? I know eventually I would have to go speak to the Jarl in Whiterun. Would it just trigger the normal dialogue you get the first time you go there, or would it skip it and go directly to the Civil War stuff instead?

If you skip the the MQ and do the civil war, it removes the diplomacy part of the MQ.

I'm wondering if this is the first time you have done the civil war as you have to do the first dragon battle before you can finish it

I've actually done it twice (once for each side), but both times I had done the MQ first. But thanks for the useless post.

It's not possible for Ulfric to win before beginning the MQ; you will be forced to start the MQ during the Civil War...

Spoiler
...when Ulfric sends you and his axe to Balgruuf, Balgruuf will postpone answering Ulfric and will require you to deal with the dragon threat first.

Sorry I did not mean to offend you that could off been worded better what I wrote. What I meant by that is Whiterun as you know plays an important role in both the MQ and the civil war.

Yeah your forced to start the MQ in order to advance the Whiterun portion of the Civil War. But you can ignore the MQ from that point and just never go to High Hrothgar.

I've done this before.

If the CW is dealt with before the diplomacy part you're given access to do the dragon-capture part instantly, you just have to talk to whoever is the Jarl of whiterun.

I'll confirm both of these. Balgruuf doesn't respond to the Axe until Mirmulnir has been taken care of, and when you get to The Fallen, you don't have to side-track into Season Unending before you can finish the quest.

Just talk to Vignar Gray Mane.

By main quest you mean after 'Dragon Rising' but before 'Season Unending.' The Imperial questline cannot be started before the former of the two, and no MQ mission is impacted by it except obviously season unending.

The Thalmor Embassy and all it's inhabitants are still there and that quest remains in it's entirety, but then again I still see Imperial and Thalmor patrols in ex-Imperial territory after completing the SC campaign so I'm not surprised.
