I have recently seen a lot of bloggers claim something along the lines that a Fallout game set in Mexico with bandits and cowboys would be cool. I have seen people claim a game should go to Russia or even the Mediterranean sea and include naval warfare with factions fighting like in the days of the Romans or Venetian lords.
Hell no!
A game set in a post nuclear Mexican desert with bandits and cowboys would be a cool action game, its not Fallout. A post nuclear Russia has been done in Metro and its a great experience but its not fallout. A game set in a post apocalyptic Mediterranean sea with naval warfare and piracy would be a interesting concept, not for Fallout.
Fallout is so great because of its setting. 50s America is such a powerful atmosphere because the 50s was remembered as a great time in America and its a stark contrast to the reality of the Fallout universe. It also includes the stigma of Red Fear and a time when a nuclear war was a distant but possible threat and in the case of Fallout, it did happen. Southwest America is particularly good because of the thick culture. All the patriotism, advertising, and music make Fallout an experience that is ironic, comedic, and horrific.
Anyways, just my thoughts, thinking about doing a video on youtube about Fallout and the importance of setting in video games.
