How deep do you go with RP'ing?

Post » Tue Oct 22, 2013 4:20 pm

Case in point: I have a separate set of clothing for when I go into towns to shop, enchant, smith, etc. I just can't justify wandering the town and shopping with Morokei on my face. I also plan to enchant these with fortify speechcraft, better prices, enchanting, alchemy, etc. when my enchanting skill is higher, to help with my bartering and such.

I would consider myself to go very deep, me and Uthred are separate beings. This relationship has lasted a year and has floured in that time. We have a "dressing gown" for those lazy mornings, and an array of fine clothes that only a nord Lord of high stature should wear. Three good meals a day, sometimes an inordinate amount of mead accompanying it.

It goes further than just acting out tasks, its about perception - When someone says something to Uthred, it is not my reaction but his reaction - How does he feel about it? What does he think about that person? Does he agree with my opinion or does he have his own?

I do get pretty immersed in it. I have many different characters because its difficult for me to stick with one all the time. They each have different personalities, different likes and dislikes, morals, etc. It never gets difficult to keep track. I know them so well because they're my creations.

I take role playing very seriously now and always use seperate clothes for different environments/occasions and I have an entire room in Lakeville manor filled with Dwemer clutter. Generally I think I take roleplaying a little too seriously and sometimes it slips into my own life.

I often call my girlfriend Brelyna or Senna by accident and refer to people as "N'wahs" when speaking in a rude or derogatory manner, as well as always calling alcoholic drinks 'Mead' and my home country the Island of Bermuda the Summerset Isles.

I go fairly deep with it, but likely not as deep as some. I also change before entering a town. Now, if I'm just riding through Riverwood on my way back to Lakeview, I'm not changing on horseback. But I don't wear armor when it isn't needed. I wear my smithing gear, circlet and leather boots. I'll also remove all but a single blade as far as weapons are concerned. No arrows on my back, just a single war axe or Dragonbane at my side.

Food is always prepared and hauled along for the journey. Stews for battles and various types of meat for meal time. We (Ghorbash and I) eat no less than twice a day and attempt to not travel at night if it can be helped. I also collect all of the mead and wines that we find because Orcs should celebrate their victories well into the night with song and strong drink. I visualize broken bottles, dented flagons and aching heads by morning.

I also plan my routes across the map when a long journey is at hand. I'll head out from my location and will try to make it to at least a town along the way before it gets too late. Rest is required and I don't just go because the game will let me. The guys need to stop for meals and the horse needs oats and rest. Plus, I always enjoy the well rested bonus if even for just a little while.

Deep enough to make me question my sanity sometimes.

Walk everywhere, eat three meals a day (more for some characters), bathe every so often and change frequently(this too is varied), actually speak the character's lines and respond to NPC's. I think sometimes I get too far into character.

Im the same. If Im just passing through a town real quick then I wont bother changing as Im pretty much right out the door. If Im in my house or staying at an inn I'll usually wear regular clothes.

Up until I went exclusively with female characters, all of my male characters would take their helmets off as soon as theyd enter a town or city. MY females dont wear helmets so I dont worry about it anymore.

I used to change out clothing, until I realized that I never remember to change back. However, I do set up rules for a character that can't be broken and follow them. Sometimes these rule sets are simple, like no killing, sometimes it is more complex with who I will work with and who I won't, what factions to join, which ones to avoid.

I believe that you that you actually live in Skyrim Micheal and only venture into our world to visit these forums! :D But seriously in answer to the OP's question, I take a good while to create a character and always give them a strict moral code which I always stick to. Because of this some of the factions are completely out for some of them, but that's about as far as I go. I would like to see a hardcoe mode introduced like Fallout has which would certainly make me role play more.

So about the food thing, is there any benefit other than fitting the RP of living life? I've never cooked or eaten food so I haven't experienced that yet...

Some of the stews provide a regeneration bonus. I like the beef, venison and vegetable stews and usually keep some on hand for those long underground walks.

the Elsweyr Fondue is usually popular among the mages.

My characters avoid traveling at night, sleep 6-8 hours at night, and usually only fast travel to major holds... so not all that deep.

On my very first character I would take off my armor except when I was about to go on an adventure and wore noble clothes and bore only a single weapon around town (lived in Solitude), but then I realized I was actually taking away from the realism, as every other character that had armor wore it, and no one ever really changed clothes but me.

Not all that deep, for me. I carry Tavern Clothes and regular boots when my Bard performs. I try to stick to my character concept, but stray a little every now and again. I even tried the Mod that has you eating and sleeping and such, but that was too much for my enjoyment. Having to go into my inventory (my most hated aspect of the game) and eat regularly was just not fun for me. Most of the RP is going into one's inventory (changing clothes, eating, etc.). I avoid that as much a possible.

Roleplaying with NPCs is VERY limited in Skyrim.

You could favorite items!

And is there a mod-less way to actually play instruments in the game?

I don't roleplay very deeply, either. My characters don't go out of their way to eat or sleep on a schedule or change clothes in a town, although sometimes when they're supposed to be chilling at home, I do have them wear comfortable clothes. I mostly play unarmored mages, anyway, so it's not like they're running everywhere in clunky armor, although my warrior characters who did use armor were generally mercenaries, so wearing their armor in town was kinda like...advertising.

I do develop a background concept for my character and try to make decisions they'd make based on their personalities. I also try to visualize how they would look (in terms of both facial/bodily features and gear) and stick as closely to that as I can manage.

Fairly deep I'd say though I bet not as far into it as some.

I unequip weapons in towns.

Have my character eat at least twice a day.

Take a bath at least once every 2 days.

No fast travel aside from carriages and only then if that character would take a carriage.

Rest at night unless they are night owls.

Only do quests I think they would find interesting.

Only hang out with people I think they would enjoy being with.

Only own homes I think suit their personality.

Now... it seems weird to say but I let them develope in their own paths once I have some ideas in mind. Some character become boring, while others just seem to breath life into the RP and immersive things I couldn't have predicted seem to happen.

We are of a like mind on this it seems. My characters usually have specific agendas(which is why I make so many) and I try to RP their choices in a way that would make sense logically in the game setting. I usually change in towns, too, because otherwise it looks like my guy is about to kill someone. Other than that though, I find myself actually designing characters in such a way that I can avoid inventory menus as much as possible. In fact, playing 2h weapon users is my favorite for this reason. I can hotkey my weapon and my heals, and really that's all I need(unless I have to change shouts - though I mostly only use become ethereal for spellcasters)

Depends on the character.

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh611/Trace9569/HPIM1263-1.jpg my first TG character had a very tight RP. Eat at least 2 times a day, sleep 6 hrs ( not always at night though). Changed out of her TG armor in town. Took a swim in the Lake outside Honeyside every day. Never killed anyone that didn't attack her first and only 2 kills in the TG questline, not including draugr/skeletons and rats. ( mercer just wasn't good at sneaking ). She didn't travel at night. very strick RP, but it was fun.

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh611/Trace9569/HPIM1783.jpg on the other hand had no real "rules", he was a werewolf/mercenary. So really the only "RP rule" he had was no returning back to a "job" to loot, IF he did said job as a werewolf....which he mostly did.

They were both very fun in different ways.

This is great stuff - a lot of ideas I can apply to my own character. I know I won't go too in depth, but stuff like not fast traveling or waiting (my biggest weaknesses haha) is going to make things a lot more fun!

Typically I've always worn "clothes" unless I was engaging in a battle or going on an epic quest, at which times I'll wear a cuirass or fur armour. Although my latest character is quite fond of his green cuirass, which I have enchanted and re-named "barabran mail", and all his gear is renamed barabran something, as I'm rping he is from a specific sub-culture of orcs from hammerfell known as Barabrans.

I find it extremely offputting and weird when I see youtube videos or pictures of people wearing daedric, ebony, nordic carved or similar armour and just wandering around town or cooking at home or whatever. I don't like such armours at the best of times but it's especially tacky and WOW-ey looking to do mundane stuff in them.
