Malacath not the sixteenth Daedric Prince

I was wondering what people's thoughts were on this. I know it's been stated that the other Daedric Princes don't consider Malacath to be one of them, and if he was a Prince, it would seem, to me at least, to be contradictory to the idea of the wheel, since the wheel has sixteen spaces, but Malacath only became a "Prince" afterward when he was [censored] out by Boethia (or however else people choose to view what happened). So it seems that if Malacath is one of the spaces on the wheel, then prior to his transformation, one of the spaces had to have been missing, if that makes any sense. Alternatively, I was thinking Mankar Camoran might not have been totally deranged, and that Lorkhan might actually have been a Prince, which would seemingly solve the issue of the missing space, which is a theory that I've seen proposed by others aswell. I'm no expert on the lore, so I'm sure I'm mistaken on some aspects, but let me know what you think.
