Screenshot Guidelines ( MUST READ BEFORE POSTING! ):
(Thanks to bashur and Matthew Kaine(?) for the original versions of this set of guidelines over in the Oblivion Mods section )

  • No criticism should be directed at a person - only constructive criticism at the posters work
    • How you should not post criticism: "That screenshot is really lame! The poster needs to learn how to screenshot!"
    • How you should post criticism: "I'm not really a fan of that screenshot; In my opinion it could use a little more flair. Maybe try to have the angle at a diagonal slant with the sun behind them, that will give them a nice silhouette."
  • If you find a post offensive, REPORT IT !
    • Moderators know to to quickly deal with any situation of this nature, and will remove any offensive posts.
    • Arguing, instigating, or making demands regarding the post invariably ends up worsening the situation.
    • Not following the above rules could result in all involved parties getting a warning, even those defending themselves.
  • Commenting on a posters style of play in screenshots:
    • Members have a wide variety of playing styles and of capturing screenshots.
    • No subjective (or moral, ethnic, political, religious, cultural, social, sixual, etc.) preferences should be dictated to others as right or wrong in this thread.

Messages from the Moderators regarding this thread
"If someone barrels in and decides that the opening post guidelines for this thread are not applicable to them,
just report them, don't bother responding. Criticism for screenshots is fine, as long as it's constructive.
"I think it's stupid" and comments of that ilk? Are not criticism. They're just rather belligerant.
Don't like a particular screenshot - then don't bloody comment." - Leydenne

"If you don't care for a particular screenshot, you do not need to comment on it. If you have constructive feedback, that is fine. And people receiving polite feedback, don't get your back up.

But just because you don't like some of the looks, or feel they show too much skin, or whatever, as long as they do not break our forum rules, you'll have to restrain yourself. Sorry- no one cares if you don't like the skimpy shots. Sure, some of them may be over the top or whatever, or simply not to one's taste, but again- if they do not break our screenshot rules, then they are fine.

Post screenshots that are pretty, that are fun, or funny or scenic. Be kind to each other. Or don't bother with the thread."- Leydenne

Tips (under development)
Camera Tips (for basic screenshots without a third-party program):

Spoiler

  • Press F on your keyboard to switch back and forth from first, to third-person view
  • Press and hold F to change the camera angle by moving your mouse around. This will rotate the camera around your character.
    • A side-to-side mouse movement will rotate the camera around your player
    • A forwards-backwards mouse movement will tilt the camera angle above or below your character
    • The mouse scroll wheel will move the camera closer or farther away
  • You can equip your weapon and/or cast a spell in this position as long as you continue to hold F
  • Press the "Print Screen" or "Prt Scr" button at any time to take your shot.

How to post your screenshots

Spoiler

  • Upload to an image hosting site. There are many popular options for doing so, including a built-in service with Steam. Per asgard: From steam's screenshot manager, you simply select a pic, then hit the upload button. Then you click on 'View online library'where you can manage all your uploaded pics.
  • Copy the URL for your image. The image hosting site you choose usually has a box with code to pick from. You'll want to get the code that refers to BBCode, and a direct URL. Do not bother with getting BBCode Image coding, as this forum does not support embedded images in posts.
  • When you post your screenshot, it's often nice to include some flavor text, rather than just posting an undescriptive URL.
  • The best way to do that is to type out the following: [ url = " TYPE YOUR URL HERE " ] TYPE NAME HERE [ / url ](without spaces)

How to swap out animations (pre CK, PC only)

Spoiler

  • Until pose mods come out, this method is the best option for making your character do things that NPCs can do!
  • You'll need a .bsa extractor. I (Eisoj5) am using a Fallout3 extractor for the time being, but there are more options out there.
  • Open the Skyrim - Animations.bsa file in your .bsa extractor. The animations for character and NPCs are located in themeshes\actors\character\animationsfolder within that file.
  • Extract the animations you want to play with. I (Eisoj5) have a separate folder for all the random stuff I like to mess with/add to Skyrim, so I put them in that folder.
  • Rename the animation you want to use ingame to sneakmtidle.hkx .
  • Copy your new sneakmtidle.hkx to Skyrim\Data\meshes\actors\character\animations. (You will have to create these subfolders if they do not already exist in your directory.)
  • In game, simply press the sneak button and your swapped animation should begin to play! Keep in mind this is only when you're sneaking and not moving. Moving will return to the regular sneak motion animation.
  • To get back to the normal sneak idle animation, just delete sneakmtidle.hkx fromSkyrim\Data\meshes\actors\character\animations.

Lighting Tips (courtesy of UKnightwatch)

Spoiler

To avoid bad lighting, I try to;

  • Not have a bright light directly behind subject
  • Not have a very bright light too close to front of subject
  • Not aim camera directly at a bright light
  • Turn my character into good lighting
  • Make good use of character items such as torch or spells that cast light and such if available

On PC;

Make use of the 'tfc' feature to move the camera accordingly to avoid bad lighting - see begining of this thread

I realise we are not all super smart when it comes to using art packages on PC (points at self as example of dimness) and we do not all have access to professional software - this has its problems.

If you are using a PC, there are some free to download image manipulating programs available - your search engine is your friend! Free software can be very basic but that is all we need. A little time taken to learn the basics of such free programs can pay off really well and bring our screenshots [more] to life.

Using FOV

Spoiler

FOV, or "field-of-view/vision", can help you zoom in for even better close-up shots.

  • Open the console using the ` key.
  • Type fov ##, where lower numbers equal a tighter zoom and higher numbers a wide angle. Close the console.
  • The game is preset to fov 65. FOVs lower than 50 are great for close-ups, but can be hard to frame if your TFC speed is high.
  • To get back to your normal setting, open the console and type either just fov again or fov 65.

MOD SUGGESTION

Spoiler

Here's a small list of mods to make your screenshots more interesting and actractive

  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10870: This mod brings you a figurines allowing you to control yourself, and a special spell that can turn any NPC into brainless puppet doing any animation you want.
  • http://mod.dysintropi.me/mods/skyrim/ Pinup style poses for your female character... or your male, if you're into that sort of thing (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/11811 needed for the mod to work)
  • http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=11757: Removes most of the blurriness from finisher moves and reduce the number of camera cuts in most moves
  • http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=7942: Removes drop of blood from screen
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/22745: Adds footprints to the player, NPCs, and creatures
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19660: Adds a snowy visual effect to the player and NPCs when snow is falling. Effects all live and deceased NPCs and wildlife with-in a set radius.
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/5164: When drawing an arrow, the arrowhead rests on the hand of all places. Unless you like having a sliced up hand, resting an arrow's head on your hand while it's nocked and drawn is a bad idea.

You may find these guide useful: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19362, http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/17837 so you won't be lost in all those awesome animations and poses

Shameless repost! :D

From now on, Vilja will look slightly different in my game. Since the original Vilja has her own face textures but uses whatever body is installed in the game, she ended up having a horrible neckseam in my game. In some lights her face looked a little too pink while her body looked gray. So I've installed the patch that removes her unique face texture and lets her use the one I have installed (which still is Coverwomen wihtout make-up). Unfortunately, this changes her face a little - I think the original Vilja is prettier. She also looks very pale with Coverwomen. But I still prefer this to that ugly gray body.

Warning, VILJA QUEST SPOILERS!

------------------------------------------------------

The Khajiit Bard

It took us a few days longer than expected to get to Riften. The reason for this was Helgen, a small fortified town on the slopes of the Jerall Mountains. The road from Falkreath to Riften passes this town, but when we arrived there, http://i.minus.com/iD4zMnG0byO2b.jpg. First, we thought there had been a battle, and that the Stormcloak rebels were responsible for an usual offensive against the Imperial garrison stationed here, but when we searched the town and its surroundings for survivors, we found http://i.minus.com/iLmPVdjimY8cd.jpg, who told us another story.

They had captured Ulfric Stormcloak and imprisoned him in Helgen for execution, he said, and I was quite surprised that rumors about such an event hadn't reached my eager bard ears.

”Something in your voice tells me he's not dead”, I said.

”No”, the soldier said. ”He escaped. And the reason why... You saw the town, didn't you? All burnt and destroyed.”

”By rebels?” I asked.

”No...” He hesitated. ”You probably won't believe me, but there was a... a dragon. A huge, black dragon. When I was a boy, I used to dream nightmares of draugr – believe me, from now on, I know what my nightmares will be about!”

We assured him that we believed him – after all, there had been rumors about the dragons being back circulating in Skyrim for quite a while now. He said he needed to get to Riverwood to warn them, but since he was shocked and wounded, we (that is, Vilja) decided to follow him there.

In Riverwood, we were asked by Hadvar's uncle to go to Whiterun and ask the Jarl to send a couple of soldiers to protect the village. http://i.minus.com/inuAC1j1vmKha.jpg, even though it meant a detour for us.

So after a ride to Whiterun and then back through Riverwood, passed Helgen, over the mountain pass and through the bear-infested forests of the Rift, we arrived in Riften.

Bandits attacked right outside the city. Don't brand me as a coward for http://i.minus.com/ibyHXaKv8LYEm7.jpg I know she was as amused as me. Maybe it sounds cold and hard, but these villains would kill for just a few items of value. They scare honest people with threats and brutal strength – it's only fair they get to http://i.minus.com/iCO2RCzDfnYbU.jpg

I had never been to Riften before, but I knew it holds quite a sinister reputation. The Jarl is said to be weak, the city is corrupt and in the hands of the Thieves Guild and the powerful Black-Briar family. None of us wished to linger.

http://i.minus.com/ieMZVJcTabyiB.jpg

”That's my flute! I'd recognize it anywhere. You go talk to him!”

”Why not you?”

”You look more – intimidating.”

I loked this tall Nord woman up and down and laughed.

”Alright”, she said, ”maybe you don't, but you're a much better talker.”

She pushed me forward, towards the Khajiit, who had stopped playing and sat down by one of the tables. I shrugged and patted him on the shoulder.

”Greetings, friend. Is your name perhaps Ra'zehn? Your second cousin Ri'saad has mentioned you. Can we talk about your flute?”

”Oh, yes, http://i.minus.com/ib0PkIpIf3qbCV.jpg – and Ra'zehn has the best flute in all of Skyrim. It is made of Cyrodilic dogwood and very precious. Will sera listen to the flute?”

I explained to him that the flute belonged to my friend. He was shocked and claimed he had bought it honestly by a ”fine Nord man” - most likely the scorned suitor who had stolen it from Vilja in the first place, which I told him.

He agreed that he had had the feeling this was a girl's flute, and he said he understood that my lady friend wanted it back, but he also proved unwilling to part from it.

”A bard needs to have a flute to play”, he said. ”And Ra'zehn hasn't got another flute. There was a flute, but it is gone...”

He told us he had lost the flute when gambling with ”a little woodelf fellow and his big Nord friend”.

”What if I buy you another flute?” I tried. I even had a decent flute in my luggage, he could have that one if he wanted – the lute is my primary instrument anyway. But he refused. He wanted his own flute back, or he would keep the one he had, he said.

”Hmm”, Vilja said. ”A little woodelf fellow and his big Nord friend? Doesn't that sound familiar, La?s?”

Of course. The two oafs that had stolen Vilja's magic bottle, when I first met her. Even better – we had seen them in Riverwood.

”Guess we're going back to Riverwood, then”, I sighed.

I performed at the Bee and Barb that night, a good performance, who rendered me http://i.minus.com/ikfUmcUZPLakt.jpg and good pay. The next morning, as we were leaving, a voice from a dark corner near the door stopped me.

http://i.minus.com/ievkL6VjPPT74.jpg He rose, a quite handsome Imperial man in wizard robes. http://i.minus.com/ib5SFUSl3S2Rk.jpg

”I suppose so”, I answered, unsure about what he wanted.

”I noticed you wore robes when you arrived. You're a wizard?”

”Not really”, I said. ”I dabble a little in Illusion... And I know a couple of summoning spells, but that's it. The robes are quite useful on the roads, though. I'm not much of the armor type.”

”So you travel a lot? Then, my friend, you've found the right person. I'm sure you and your lady friend could use a master of the arcane by your side. I'm Marcurio, at your service.” He bowed. ”My skills in battle are unmatched – and luckily for you, that skill can be bought, for measly 500 gold.”

So he was a mercenary, trying to get a job.

”I'm sorry”, I said, ”but me and my friend are doing fine on our own.”
”Ah, well.” He looked disappointed. http://i.minus.com/ihpEBtQgYkp7W.jpg He shrugged and sat down again. ”If you change your mind, seek me out here. Remember – why settle for just stabbing your foes, when you can roast them in a gout of arcane fire?”

http://i.minus.com/idnjIeLE5yblb.jpg, Vilja said when we were outside.

”Do you really think we need him?”

”Maybe not... But there's one thing...”

She told me that one of the ingredients she needed to collect for Anesia was a mushroom called the Blood Dripping Crown. And it was very, very rare – but apparently, the necromancers and warlocks in Boulderfall Cave in the northern Rift grew them.

http://i.minus.com/ibkUgVmWdwlFhp.jpg”, she added. ”Those wizards are both skilled and ver hostile against intruders, Anesia said. But I really, really need to find a sample of that mushroom, and I've looked everywhere!”

”Alright”, I said. ”If we decide to go there, maybe you're right, maybe we could use this Marcurio and his 'arcane fire'. But let's find Ra'zehn's flute first. And we really need to get back to Solitude with Rjorn's drum.”

In Riverwood, http://i.minus.com/ibsioT3tfPPd0F.jpg (who still looked terrified when he saw us, and claimed he had been cursed by Vilja's bottle) and the little wood elf fellow told us that Ra'zehn's flute was gone.

I sighed and asked them where.

”Well I sold it to another bard”, the elf explained. ”I have no use for a flute. A Redguard fellow bought it. Said he was heading for Dawnstar. If you find him, he might let you buy it. But hurry up. I think he was planning to leave Skyrim. Didn't like the climate much, he said – not that I blame him...”

”Oh, La?s, we must hurry to Dawnstar then!” Vilja was eager.

http://i.minus.com/ibztpaFVcEdw00.jpg, I said. I had been prepared to go back to Riften once again, but now – a detour to Dawnstar as well? ”Let's stay here for the night, and go back to Riften tomorrow. I'm sure we can convince Ra'zehn to give you your flute back, even if we have to threat him, or pay him twice it's worth, or anything. http://i.minus.com/ibit7974cpCXKo.jpg”

Vilja sighed.

http://i.minus.com/iFqRzfaukkRUe.jpg, she said. ”I've been dragging you all over Skyrim on my missions... You're right. We don't even need to go back to Riften tomorrow, we can go to Solitude first if you like.”

She fell silent, then looked at me.

”It's strange”, she said. ”I've been so homesick – longing for my family, and for Solstheim. But since I met you... since we became friends... I don't feel like a lonely and homesick outcast any more. To be honest – I'm so glad you're here with me. I hope our friendship will last for a long time to come.”

”So do I, Vilja.” I gave her a friendly punch on the arm. ”And you know it will, after all we've been through. Come, let's head to the inn. I need a drink.”

She smiled and agreed that she needed a drink, too.

But her words lingered. I knew this flute was dear to her, and I also realized that it would be much harder to convince Ra'zehn to give it up if we didn't have his old flute to trade with. The next morning, http://i.minus.com/iJhUAT5MqvGvP.jpg, and afterwards, I went to find Vilja.

”Come, Vilja”, I said. ”Get your gear. We're going to Dawnstar.”

Shameless repost as well.

The sting from the werewolf's bite on my shoulder was bringing a tear to the corner of my eyes but I brushed it aside. I had been hurt worse but there was something different about this wound. I decided to go further down the passage and see if I could find any witches willing to aid me and sure enough there was one She had to have heard the battle echoing through the cavern http://i.minus.com/iboO0WxSGGJlxa.jpg

"I see you met our little friend... http://i.minus.com/igGss9m85gEdV.jpg "We don't often get outsiders visiting us you see. I am sure the others quite forgot he was still here. Its a shame he is dead now. We'll have to look for another guardian."

http://i.minus.com/i511MoeUN5Bud.jpg. "He was twice the size of a troll and just as deadly! http://i.minus.com/i4OTruk3NCOep.jpg

http://i.minus.com/idszY4q966Qzd.jpg Once he tasted blood I'm afraid there would have been little we could do. But since it seems you still live and have all your arms and legs, let me apply some ointment to that wound. http://i.minus.com/iJzlCSbD2ivH5.jpg

I wanted to turn down any further aid from them but my shoulder burned. I couldn't find any good reason to resist the ointment for my wound if it would help.http://i.minus.com/i6dSlQOsbVHOM.jpg So I let her clean my wound and apply the ointment and sure enough, the pain subsided. And yet I still felt sick, like one feels if trying to digest chicken that was not properly cooked. Once she was done I decided to leave. This place was to strange for me and I was beginning to believe they had tricked me into coming in here. I shouldn't have come and every moment spent here was putting me further into danger.

As I made my way towards the entrance to the cave I came across the blind altmeri witch. http://i.minus.com/ifA1aQ6NpOHEk.jpg "Leaving so soon? You really shouldn't you know. http://i.minus.com/ibdxGJZ7vW6p9D.jpg

http://i.minus.com/iWOF0TMVzRs2P.jpg I've had enough of your hospitality as I can stand I believe. I think the longer I stay, I'll further endanger us all." And I meant what I said. I was leaving without killing them, something I entertained the thought of doing. They had not forgotten about their guardian and I was suspecting they had wanted me to encounter him. How do five witches forget they have a werewolf?

"I'm sorry you feel that way." She smiled.http://i.minus.com/ibq2hKKllIu6wZ.jpg

As I stepped back out into the light, the witch outside also seemed disappointed that I was leaving. I didn't care to explain why I was but decided to ask just what this place was that I had just visited. Mostly for my own curiosity so I would avoid it in the future. http://i.minus.com/ibe4u7I9Gou8O8.jpg

http://i.minus.com/iinU3EoAANSer.jpg As a child we were told stories to frighten us of the fabled Glenmoril Witches who were the most powerful and ancient hagravens known in all of Skyrim. I was always told if I didn't go to sleep, they would come in the night and eat me... But now I was realizing there maybe was some truth to those tales. Odd though that I hadn't seen a hagraven in there. It was a good thing I was leaving when I did. However I did not get far from that Coven http://i.minus.com/iTxH0KgU6cWrA.jpgmy morning breakfast. As disgusting as that was, I will admit I did feel better afterwards. In fact I felt strangely better... So much so in fact that as I headed towards the Reach I came across a mine run by a couple of orcs who were not hospitable towards outsiders. As they rushed me Ihttp://i.minus.com/igfMbsLdCy0jA.jpg with a strength I didn't know I had.http://i.minus.com/iUnweXp9qevpf.jpg before turning on the other and picking him up http://i.minus.com/ibawWnNiDp7aWD.jpg

Back in the Reach I decided it best I head straight home http://i.minus.com/iilVIkHvmImEL.jpgby the side of the road. She thanked me but I told her it best she move along before she share their fate. I also came across a http://i.minus.com/izJSYriCA9kTE.jpg which to even now http://i.minus.com/ible3BkccwHZwD.jpg http://i.minus.com/iyG6Q5FQAVYR0.jpg

But things were about to get stranger as I walked into Druadach Redoubt and found everyone standing near the cage we had by the main fire. http://i.minus.com/iTfhkbLpWEY2S.jpgMadanach spoke as I walked up. http://i.minus.com/iTfhkbLpWEY2S.jpg But now that your here and since your my general so to speak... her fate is up to you."

"Why is this even up for debate?" http://i.minus.com/ibinw5yJlppZGy.jpg. "She is trespassing. I say we... wait... I know that armor." And I did know that armor. It bore the same insignia of the wolf that the nord with face paint wore. The same nord who saw me kill the bather not to long ago. I had convinced him to leave without trouble but there was more of them? This called for a different approach. "Who would miss you if we killed you?" http://i.minus.com/ib0NmjEZCSbzKK.jpg"And don't lie to me. Who are you and more importantly why are you here."

http://i.minus.com/ioPz3Pq9JglHJ.jpgI belong to a group called The Companions." I could see she was frightened as she spoke, even if her voice did not betray her.

http://i.minus.com/iG7aQC352EzjB.jpg

"I was sent here by my shield sister Aela to kill a sabre cat pestering the miners of Karthwasten, that is all I swear!" She explained. "However this was my first assignment so far from home. I got lost in the fog and fell down a cliff. http://i.minus.com/iohFJB2O5Nqpb.jpg

For some reason I chose to believe her and knew that if we did kill her, this group... these Companions would certainly come looking for her. And that man... he'd know right were to lead them. This was trouble we didn't need so soon after getting Madanach out of prison. So I decided to take a more strategic route instead.
