I was wondering if there's a limit to how many followers you can have at a house you have bought? (Vanilla, no expansions). For example, if you dismiss Lydia, she will go to Breezehome instead of Dragonsreach as usual. Will other followers do the same, or is it just housecarls, or what? Because say if I wanted to change my mind and not have Lydia in my house but someone else, she won't go anywhere BUT breezehome, and I do not want to kill her.

When you dismiss a follower they return to "their" original place.

How come Lydia went to my house instead of Dragonsreach? Does this mean only the housecarls or wives/husbands can stay at your house?

Only one follower can ever be at your house. Two if your spouse is a follower.

Housecarls will go to your own home depending on the city.

Lydia lives in Breezehome.

That answers it! What if I have a house in Whiterun, and dismiss a housecarl from Riften, will she/he still go to whiterun?

After you purchase it, yes.

If you dismiss your housecarl from Riften then he/she will go back to riften. A housecarl from a different hold/city can't live in another city/hold unless they become your steward or your married to them. Basically, housecarls live in the city they were assigned to. So if you move from whiterun to solitude, Lydia stays on whiterun and you get Jordis on Solitude.
