Meshtexture Problems

Post » Thu Nov 07, 2013 10:22 am

What would cause a mesh that was working perfectly fine in one game session to lose it's textures on the next game load up? Or in some cases, where the textures turn black? Or in another case where part of the mesh is completely transparent? And what I mean by game load up is quitting the game completely to desktop first and then starting it back up, then loading the save file to play within a few minutes of quitting.

And even more strange, restarting the computer fixes it, which if I quit the game to desktop again and load it back up again a few minutes later, the same problem occurs once more and does not go away until I restart the computer.

I have a GeForce GTX 460 v2 for a video card.

black usually means no normal map.

My first suspicion is you may be seeing the early signs of either a disk or controller failure. Intermittent problems like that are usually hardware related.

I know you don't want to hear that, but most independent computer repair shops will run a diagnostic for free or low cost. (Big box stores tend to have minimum bench fees.)

Don't be so hasty. You can't suggest hardware problems without first going through the software troubleshooting.

Does this problem happen on vanilla models or ones added through modding? Or is happening to both?

If the problem resolves itself by any means without changing anything, such as simply rebooting the computer, then the meshes are present in the correct paths on the disk. If there have been no changes to the LO between reboots (and we need the OP to confirm that), then it's highly unlikely that a mod conflict will be intermittent under the same circumstances. Software issues tend to be consistent once you can pin down the circumstances under which they occur.

However, that apparently the same save file that is loaded when the game starts then fails upon quitting to the desktop and reloading during the same computer session indicates that something is changing between loads. Given the software isn't changing, then it's hardware related. Overheating (given enough time), power fluctuations, or component degradation are the most common causes of intermittent, repeatable but inconsistent problems.

But certainly it costs nothing but time to eliminate potential software issues first.
