On making multiple saves

Post » Fri Nov 08, 2013 5:24 am

I'm having one of those moments where I'm paranoid about corrupting saves somehow. The other day I made two saves, and in between them I'd left the in-game menu and then went back into it, then out of it again. I moved a few feet and then made the second save. Obviously this involves pausing the game a number of times...could it create a borked save, or am I just being stupid? I don't use any quicksaves or autosaves, only hardsaves.

Make as many saves you want, but not too much. (10 or 20 should be enough) (Don't override them, just make new, and delete the older ones)

If you want to save more, make a backup from your saves to a folder anywhere on your disk and put them there.

And i recommend to make always manual saves.

Then you should be fine....

I never override saves, and I now copy and paste saves out of my main save folder and delete the originals to keep stuttering on the main menu and in-game load menu down. I just worry so much about mucking something up, such as a script that's running and being paused between making multiple saves in a short amount of time.

I dunno...you may have already broken your gamesave. I'm just messin with ya, what you're doing is entirely safe. You can however save more than 20 times and you don't need to really start deleting the old ones until it's an insane amount...otherwise you'll have deleted majority of the saves that may be essential if you mess up on a quest or if a mod breaks the game. Always have at the very LEAST 10-20 saves. Assuming that you don't save after every time you sneeze or complete a quest, you'll have a manageable amount of saves to work with.

I save quite regularly although this is technically a DiD play-through. The time between the two saves is about 23 seconds, but with pausing the game via the in-game menu in-between the two trips to the save menu. Basically, I saved and then moved a few feet, accessed the menu, didn't save, moved a few feet, then accessed the menu and saved the second time.

OP I have 1,579 saves and I have never encountered a corrupted save. Having played Oblivion, I'm naturally paranoid of corrupted saves, as that ran rampant in that game. I save in the same routine in Skyrim as I did in oblivion, which was 5 min between saves before I got streamline to do it for me with streamsave. I think your game is gonna be ok, and just from my experience, there's nothing wrong with playing it safe with saving, even if you think it's a little extreme.

Btw, Oblivion saves have a high chance of corrupting with auto-save, this is generally why you see people saying to turn it off in Skyrim., IIRC there is only one place in Skyrim, or rather Solstheim that forces auto save, so I would never trust those, even if it's a different game.

Thank you for the replies. I just...worry about things, about anything. If it's not one thing, it's another.

Well, most of the things I read on save corruption have made me realise that a corrupt save wouldn't actually load, or it'd repeatedly crash after so long playing that save (without actually loading my save and playing it, there's no way to know). Bugged saves...oh, well, I know reloading while in third person causes problems for me in combat, but that doesn't mean a save is bugged. I just had it in my head I might have stopped a script and mucked it up by unnecessarily pausing the game between the two saves in such a short period of time (only 23 seconds between the two).
