TES4 Radio

So, you are probably thinking what the heck is TES4 Radio? Well, you can blame Pseron Wyrd and Shelly Mars for putting the idea into my head, like a sappy radio song that you just can’t shake. Ever since they posted their lyrics of Axe-Wielding Briarheart, whenever I hear popular music from the classic rock era of the 1970s and early 80s, my mind starts replacing the lyrics with Oblivion references.

Example: Last night in the car, a certain Eagles song came on the radio. It started like any other song “On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair . . .” but my mind started to wander when Don Henley got to the colitas and by the time I started singing along with the chorus, instead of the traditional lyrics, out of my mouth came the following:

“There’s plenty of food at the Hotel Tiber Septim

If you can pay the fee

They’ll treat you like royalty.

Yeah, I’m livin it up at the Hotel Tiber Septim . . .”

Well, you get the idea.

This has been going on for some time, and I have now written several full length Oblivion “songs”. I need to share them with the community, so I am starting a TES4 Radio station that broadcasts Oblivion “songs” on Dwemer Radio from the top of White Gold Tower. And by “songs”, I of course mean lyrics. You have to provide the music by humming along in your head to a popular and well known tune.

The purpose of the thread is to share and discuss Oblivion through poetry and other related forms of creative writing in a fun way by roleplaying that it is being broadcast on a radio station in Cyrodiil. Hopefully, the poetry in these songs speaks to people in an intuitive way that spurs discussion of throughts about Oblivion that might not surface through ordinary conversation. Isn’t that the goal of poetry? Speaking to the soul. Plus, the cheesy atmosphere of Oblivion seems perfect for this type of venture.

I am hoping others will participate and share lyrics for “songs” of their own work. My “songs” will be mostly in the style of classic rock and pop country music from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. But others can post any style they want.

I am going to introduce each song with some commentary from a fictional DJ (Doctor Jauffre Lava) who is loosely patterned after a certain fictional DJ from a certain cheesy 1970s sitcom about a failing radio station in Cincinnati. Other people posting their own work should feel free to adopt any DJ persona they desire.

The format won’t be limited to just “songs” either. We could have Cyrodiil “news” broadcasts or talk shows. The point is to keep it focused on Oblivion but to do it in a creative fashion that seems like something you might hear on a radio station.

And of course feel free to discuss anything you “hear” here on TES4 Radio. Listener comments are always welcome.

I am posting this in the Spoilers section to preserve artistic freedom, since some of the songs may contain mild “spoilers.” I will be primarily focusing on vanilla Oblivion, but at some point may branch out to some of the more well-known mods. You will know your mod has made it to the big time if it has been spoofed by Turija.

So, with that introduction, you will have to wait until Friday for Doctor Jauffre Lava’s debut broadcast. (Have to build up a little anticipation, but I will give you a little spoiler -- the first disc he will spin is a rock anthem called Mehrunes Dagon/I am the Champion of Cyrodiil, by Queen Potema). In the meanwhile, feel free to post any of your own songs or make any suggestions for format or future songs.

I do take requests, but I cannot guarantee the results will be any good. I am likely to turn your favorite tune into guar poo faster than you can say badly installed mod.
