TESNexus Compromised?

Post » Sun Nov 17, 2013 11:39 am

Hello there, I am a returning member and recently have found myself wanting to play Morrowind again for the first time in several year. About a year ago I was given a box of old PC games, Morrowind and its expansions were among the many game that were inside the box. I went ahead and installed the game and the expansions, and went ahead and visited TESNexus, a website I had used in the past to find Oblivion mods. The thing is I was unable to remember my password, so naturally I went through the recovery process and logged in. I then proceeded to down-load the Nexus Mod Manager. After that was finished I opened the website back up and tried to log in again but was unable to. Pop-up windows started appearing, and a bunch of adds had almost magically appeared on the webpage. Worst of all the extension 'Privdog' I received when I installed Comodo Firewall had been disabled.

I of course ran a scan with Avast and Malwarebytes, and installed Spyware Blaster. Everything seems fine now, thankfully. My question is this. Has anyone else had a similar issue with TESNexus recently? I did a Google search and saw that several users who frequented the webpage back in 2010 had similar issues. I was, however, unable to find any post that suggested that others have had any their computers compromised. I again am not sure if this is something new or has been an ongoing issues since 2010 and has yet to resolved.

Never used the nexus mod manager, I download the mods 'manually'. Have downloaded tons of stuff from there for all sorts of games, never had issues like you've described but as I said I've not used the mod manager.-kaos

The Nexus mod manager won't work with a great deal of Morrowind mods and since Morrowind handles mods differently than Oblivion it's not really nececary to have a mod manager. It's best to just learn how to install them manually, most of the time it's as simple as a drag and drop and clicking a tickbox in the launcher.

I apologize for the confusion, it would seem that I put too much focus on the installation of the game and the mod manager, which distracted from the main point of the thread. Allow me to correct the mistake in this post. I am more than capable of installing mods manually, I have done so in the past with both Morrowind and Oblivion. The problem is the fact that when I went to use a once trusted website recently, by recently I mean yesterday, my computer had been infected with malware and several other infections. Also my password no longer worked after completing the recovery process, in addition to that a security browser extension/plug-in had been disabled.

My concern is that the website may be compromised. Several forum posts I found via a Google search suggest that the website during some point in 2010 was compromised, however, I could not find any that stated that the issue had been resolved. I created this post to ask other community members if they have had a similar experience with TESNexus recently. My computer is clean now and was prior to visiting TESNexus again for the first time in years.

A few months ago, the Nexus sites had a lot of problems with overloaded and outdated hardware, as well as constant DDoS attacks for a period of about a week or two. This caused the sites to be often unavailable, as well as causing extremely long page load times and downloads, but I don't recall anyone complaining about their PCs being infected with malware by visiting - I know it didn't happen to me. Eventually they upgraded some hardware and the script kiddies got bored and went away, and the Nexus has been much easier to use.

I haven't found any reports along that line on the Nexus so far, and since the release of Skyrim its visitors have become pretty complain-happy with every little hickup, so it's highly unlikely they wouldn't have complained about a suspected infection like this by now as well in like 20 identical topics, if it was a common issue.

I myself I'm visiting the place on a regular basis, checking my mods' comments and answering help requests, and so far I haven't encountered any such issues, neither with downloading nor with the manager. And this issue back in 2010 has long since been resolved as well.

I visit Nexus several times daily and I have not been infected with a virus. If your computer has been infected with a virus you almost certainly got it from some other site.

You should just send a note to the DarkOne or the admin team there and let them know - I haven't downloaded anything lately but I've never had trouble with that site apart from some lame adds

In any case it is more likely the team will be happy to know there might be an issue to look into
