Tips for being a Mage

Hey guys,

So I'm presently playing a Destruction Mage in Skyrim and having a pretty solid go at it (Even if Immersive Creatures is equal parts entertaining and infuriating), and for whatever reason I'm getting the itch to fire up Morrowind yet again.

My last full Morrowind playthrough was with a Mage Slayer Warrior (Heavy Armor, Sword and Board, Atronauch Birth Sign). So playing through as a mage...I was wondering if anyone had any tips and tricks to pass along. And yes, I know about the Mentor's Ring.

Are you playing with mods? If so, GCD is great for a pure mage without upsetting balance too much. A Breton/Apprentice is very easy to play. If vanilla, the best sign is Atronach with Alchemy as a major. This allows you to make potions right from the start to sell and upgrade your equipment until you can build a pile of restore health and magicka potions. If you have Alchemy under control you don't even need a magicka bonus race. In fact I like Nords for their racial resistances. Their lack of natural magicka can be offset by taking a fortify intelligence potion which directly affects magicka at a 3:1 ratio. Not talking about potion stacking abuse, just one or two moderate potions can double your magicka for the length of a typical battle.
