Ancestral Worship

So I've noticed ancestral worship is apparently a big thing throughout Tamriel. The Dunmer had a whole complex system for it, right down to racial abilities in gameplay. The Nords apparently too, as evident by the redshirt Stormcloak on the chopping block saying "my ancestors are smiling at me, Imperials." Even Delphine tried the ancestor card when giving off her unconvincing reasons why Paarthurnax had to die. And I'm given to understand ancestral worship was very common in the Summurset Isles.

Now, it is one thing to present it academically as the series does, but I never understood the sentiment behind it. For example, going back to the disposable Stormcloak man in Skyrim's opening, what is the point behind the ancestral guilt-tripping?

Because the Ancestors of all Men and Mer are the Eight/Nine Divines.

Bosmer and Orsimer even practice Cannibalism as a Funerary Rite.

Mother Kyne and Father Shor for a Nord is honoring thier Eldest Ancestry.
