Thoughts on the Dwemer

(Warning - this thread could get very depressing)

Am I the only one who feels sad for them, especially Yagrum Bagarn from Morrowind? Imagine going away for a long time, then coming back to suddenly find out you were an endling (the last of your kind). The shock would be huge - imagine Yagrum coming back to entire settlements empty and decaying, with everyone he knew reduced to piles of ash on the cold stone floor and nothing but hissing machinery for company. (I'm sure someone has touched on it in a fanfic somewhere.)

Fast forward 3,751 years (from 1E700 to 4E201) and if Yagrum Bagarn isn't still around, then all that's left of the Deep Elves are crumbling tunnels (overrun by Falmer and giant spiders), angry ghosts, everlasting steam-powered robots and pilfered artifacts.

Now, before you start bleating about the Falmer, let me ask you this: do you honestly think that every single dwarf right across Tamriel was OK with the idea of poisoning and enslaving the snow elves? Come on, people, not even the Altmer are that bad.

There's also the question of the Heart of Lorkhan experiment. UESP's anolysis of the lore and in-universe research tells me that had Kagrenac not used The Calling at the moment of his ascension attempt, he would have been the only one to experience the botched reforging process. But he was both arrogant and incompetent enough to think that he had absolutely gotten it right and every male, female and child had to be included in the experiment. By using the Calling, Kagrenac assured that the failure of his experiment killed not only himself, but every other Dwemer on Nirn in an instant. The only reason Yagrum Bagarn survived was because of his absence from Mundus. Fortunately, his notes and the subsequent experiments at Winterhold helped solve the mystery in-universe.

Is it possible to undo what was done to the Dwemer? Even if Kagrenac's notes could be recovered, such experiments would be unacceptably dangerous, for obvious reasons. One wrong move and you suffer the same fate as he did.
