How should I texture a MASSIVE mesh?

Post » Sun Nov 24, 2013 9:29 am

I have a mesh that's quite large (about the size of Whiterun). I was wondering how do I texture this behemoth? If I use a couple textures it will look terrible. If I use high-res textures the game will lag.

My thoughts are to use looping textures for some parts, and then different textures in transitions between the looping textures. But, I really don't know. I've never modeled anything remotely this scale.

Why do you think it will look terrible using multiple textures? In fact, you're going to have no choice really. You'll never be able to UV map that entire thing into one texture file.

What's a looping texture?

Ground textures are a good example of a looping texture. The same texture just repeated many times over a surface. Although, I'm not sure if whether it'd save more memory to have one 512x512 texture repeated over an area 10 times, or to have 1 big 5120x5120 texture cover the area.
