Unofficial Worldcanon Thread

Post » Wed Nov 27, 2013 1:02 am

Over on the Morrowind Mods subforum, they have an ongoing thread series called Show Us What You're Working On, which is basically a communal thread for small or early WIP mods that aren't quite ready for their own devoted thread (or don't particularly need one). I thought it might be kind of fun to have a similar page over here. Everyone here has their own interpretation of Tamriellic lore, and since the games leave a lot of blanks to be filled, I'm always curious to see what others come up with. Since most of the devoted threads tend to focus on the more mythic side of things, or else somebody posting an in-universe writing sample (which again tends toward the big picture/mythology), I think a lot of the worldbuilding that we do for ourselves doesn't get as much recognition.

I hesitate to post examples, because I don't really want to put any implied constraints on what people can post here, but these are two posts that inspired the thread in the first place.

I have been thinking about something kind of small scale but what I consider interesting. I like poetry, even if I am terrible at it.

Some kind of linked verses (akin to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renku or maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renshi) as a part of a specific culture in TES. The problem is that I am having trouble thinking which group it would be most fitting for.

I was leaning towards the Dunmer as it would be kind of interesting if they would have a triple linked type of verse poetry. Mostly tied to aspects of the Tribunal or Good Daedra. There could be several forms. Maybe like this.

Dunmer 1- Almalexia/Boethia Aspect

-9

-6

-3

Dunmer 2- Sotha Sil/Azura Aspect

-9

-6

-3

Dunmer 3- Vivec/Mephala Aspect

-9

-6

-3

The numbers being syllables.

A bad example.

Dunmer poet 1-

Healer of the shadowed hearts of yore,

Reveler in pain.

Show us more.

Dunmer poet 2-

Lawyer of the haunted paths of old,

Solver of mystery,

Break the mold.

Dunmer poet 3-

Revealer of the six hidden paths,

Splitter of truth in words,

Stave your wrath.

Now replace anyone of those with any variation in quality. The idea is that someone else finishes from where you left off in a theme that ties into the overarching themes.

Reman was Tsaesci (or at least was eaten by them), so brawl around Pale Pass was internal conflict.

The true leader of the Thalmor is an ancient Ayleid secretly controlling the group from the shadows. I am also toying with the idea that he had dealings with Mankar Camoran, manipulaing him into beginning the Oblivion Crisis, all a carefuly constructed and calculated plan which allowed the Thalmor to take control of the Altmeri government.

"There I was - naked." - common memory to those under the Atronach

I've discovered children born as "womb-burn," or under the Atronoch, can remember their own birth. Their breadth of memory apparently allows the Womb-burn to weave together elaborate spells in duress.

These are several entries I contributed for a bestiary in the Tamriel Rebuilt mod. It's a communal effort, so you'll have to play the mod if you want to read the mall.

The Slaughterfish
This carnivorous and aggressive creature can be found in lakes, rivers, and along shorelines across Tamriel. They are considered a curse and a pest by all who venture on the water, though their scales are prized by alchemists, and, in certain reaches of Argonia, used as currency. Among sailors the story goes that slaughterfish are the souls of those who betray or kill a crew member, set about by Molag Bal to hunt their former comrades. Thus large groups of slaughterfish can often be seen trailing ships for miles in the open ocean, and slaughterfish are known to occur in far greater number the closer one gets to the fabled Maelstrom of Bal.

The Snow Whale
Much is written in Nordic lore of the snow whales, majestic beings who live among the highest mountain peaks, and freely move through air, snow and ice as if swimming through water. Children's stories portray snow whales as the singers of clouds, and claim that their emanations are the cause of all the joy in the world. This is why Nords and children alike grow cheerful in the snow, and celebrate the cold weather even as it obstructs their paths and endangers their crops.

The Troll
A large, ape-like monster, prone to lurking in caves and forests across Tamriel. Western breeds are distinguished by a remarkable third eye on the forehead. Trolls have the ability to recover from any wound, and, unless scorched by fire, can even return from death in this way. This has led the Order of Arkay and many Meridian cults to declare the troll a revenant beast, to be exterminated under their various divine pacts. Trollbone is a popular material for armor among the Nords, who believe that the regenerative capacity of the trolls will keep their armor maintained, and may even be transferred upon the user in the hour of need. They are not alone in this supposition: trollbone charms and amulets can be found among the Reachmen, the Bjoulsae tribes and various Bosmer clans. Furthermore, powdered trollbone is a popular ingredient in Nibenese rejuvenation potions, and the extinct Kothringi nomads were said to hammer sharp splinters of trollbone under their skins in times of war.

The Petty Troll
A diminutive cousin of the western troll, these small three-eyed monkeys can be encountered in southern Pellitine and along the Niben river valley. Originally forest dwellers, these creatures have in recent times moved into the cities, where they are regarded as a pest the likes of rats or street dogs. Packs of petty trolls have been known to rob market stands, attack passersby and, though not carnivorous, they have developed a sinister reputation for cradle-robbing. In the Nibenese totem-worship, the petty troll is considered a minor animal spirit, protector of inexperienced thieves and the more vulgar sort of bandits.

The Carnelian or Imperial Sea-Snail
These massive snails can be encountered in the mangroves of the lower Niben delta, and are easily recognized by the great, horned shell they carry around on their back, which serves them as a home. Among the Nibenese, they are much prized for the vibrant red dye they secrete, which is said to be an exact imitation of the Imperial ruby's color. As such, all official banners and heraldry of the Empire must be painted in sea-snail red, and many villages are dedicated to producing this dye. In the wild these snails rarely grow larger than a man, but in captivity they can grow almost unlimited, and it is not unusual to see their shells used as houses along the east banks of the Niben. Tradition dictates that, once every five years, the Emperor must sail down the Niben and exhibit the Amulet of Kings to the gathered sea-snails, in order to remind them of the color they are to produce.

Some of my headfanlore canons:

  • Tongues use(d) the Thu'um to manipulate and control the weather. They would often do this in battle in order to turn the tables in their favour.
  • The Dragon Cult had a network of relays throughout Skyrim which served as transportation conduits between the temples. To use them, one would stand on the "take-off" spot, shout "Wuld-Nah-Kest", and be transported to the destination conduit. What the conduit does is increase the power of the shout, enabling the user to travel longer distances than what would otherwise be impossible.
  • The Nords utilize whale skeletons as frames when constructing their ships.
  • Skuldafn does not actually look the way it does in-game. In truth, It is a place that is far older and more alien.
  • Dragon Priests could commute with Jills.
  • The Nordic language is either a dialect of Draconic or an old tongue that was highly influenced by Draconic. Scholars are not quite which.
