Is the lore even canon?

Post » Thu Nov 28, 2013 9:27 pm

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Does the lore actually count as canon? How can you just know that something you read in a book somewhere is canon? Who is this Temple Zero Society guy, anyway? Just some dude who thought the universe was made by something called an Anu and something called a Padomay? That doesn't even make any sense! As far as I'm concerned, it all seems like glorified fanfic.

Sure it's funny in some ways, but there was honestly no need for this thread. Forums don't need any help getting clogged up.

Also, curiously enough, I find that in some cases (reading through older threads) "lore" is used as an exact synonym for "canon". This terminology suggests the idea that Tamriel itself is not consistent, besides the media we experience it through. Most people would like their fantasy settings with inbuilt coherence, and indeed I've seen it claimed that this is a mark of the fantasy or science-fiction genre, but it might not need be the case. In Vivec's words:

Oh. It's you. You're still joking around. Alright, I'll humor you.

Read the annotated anuad. It's all obviously there. When you sleep, you obviously dream, so when Anu slept, it obviously he's going to dream and since he's damn powerful, his dream became real. The Golden rule is Lore > gameplay, canon is entirely another matter as one can have their own head canon in TES without breaking lore. Of course, it doesn't make your canon legit for the other million players. Though lore is use as the building ground to make one own's canon.

I still think you're that frost troll I might on the way to High Hrothgar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYCMTjkk_XE

Hmm...this thread reminds me of an old argument: is Hammerfell's cannon even can(n)on? Lolwut.
