Useful and Useless Shouts

Post » Fri Nov 29, 2013 8:04 am

This subject has probably been done to the death, but I've only been playing for a week. So I wondered if anyone has any advice as to which shouts to go for and the ones to avoid please? Are we limited to the number of dragon souls we can collect, or can we eventually get every shout going?

Thanks in advance.

you can usually end up getting more souls then you'll know what to do with. For example I had most shouts found and all three words for each unlocked and still had about 30 souls left to spend.

Dragons from dragonwalls will respawn but you will likely not get souls from them anymore. random dragon attacks will always have souls.

As for shouts to avoid... its up to your style. No harm in getting them all. Just read the description for them before spending a soul.

I will say Clear Skies and Unrelenting Force are my most used.

You can absorb souls an unlimited amount of times.

Unrelenting Force is generally liked.

Dragonrend, Sprint, Unrelenting Force are the only ones that ever used. The spell tomes makes the shouts redundant. However, I let my companions fight the dragons. I just watch the game play out [which is more entertaining] them walk in to claim the prize.

Unrelenting force is in my opinion ( and alot of others) the best shout in the game once you have all three words of power. Nothing like Fus-Ro-Dah'ing a group of bandits off a cliff :)

4974th cave bear this session. Cliff/waterfall. Unrelenting Force. :tes:

Dragonrend so I'm not firing quite so many arrows up into the air.

Flamebreath for all the spilled oil on the floor under the semi-flammable draugrs.

Ice form for locking down multiple enemies in front. Critters like wolves can die outright; others are stuck until you attack or the ice eventually melts.

I'm trying to make myself use more than the basics I've found work for me so far.

I use the Fortify Restoration loop to let me use Shouts without cooldowns once I reach a certain point in the story, so I use shouts pretty frequently.

Shouts I use often:

Spoiler
Unrelenting Force
Elemental Fury
Whirlwind Sprint
Become Ethereal

Ice Form

Throw Voice

Summon Durenhviir

Odahviing

Soul Tear

Slow Time

Marked for Death

Dragonrend

Drain Vitality

Clear Skies

Aura Whisper

Shouts I find useless:

Spoiler
Disarm
Dismay
Call of Valor
Kyne's Peace

Animal Allegiance
Battle Fury

Dragon Aspect (Due to its once a day limit)

Thanks for your replies, it's good to know I won't run out of dragon souls and regret wasting them on shouts I won't use ( which was my main concern ). I'll certainly give some thought as to how I'm going to use them first though.

I've never heard of a "Fortify Restoration loop" - is that a cheat, or something anyone can get?

It's an alchemy exploit, using that loop eventually allows one to create for example insanely strong Fortify Smithing potion which in turn allows tempering armor and weapons insane levels.

Some use it but at least I do consider it a stupid way to ruin the joy of playing the game. You might call it a cheat as basically it is one. I've never used it and never will. I even can't use it anyway since USKP fixes this exploit.

Same here. The only glitch/exploit I've ever used was the Oghma glitch, and that was only one time just to try it. I agree these exploits ruin it for me.

I hear what you are both saying. There was a duplication cheat in Oblivion which allowed you to make unlimited copies of items so you could sell them over and over. I ended up with so much money that I stopped looting and dungeon clearances became boring, as I just didn't bother looking for chests and stuff.

But thanks for answering my question though.

I haven't experienced any of the new shouts from the DLCs, but generally, there are no useless shouts, per se. It depends on character build and roleplay.

The only shouts I've never had any use for would be Kyne's Peace and Animal Allegiance.

The ones I use the most have to be Disarm, Fire Breath, Marked for Death, and Soul Tear.
