Moss Mother Cavern - Valdr will not talk to me.

Post » Fri Nov 29, 2013 3:37 am

Hi there,

I am currently stuck in the quest Moss Mother Cavern, because Valdr does not talk to me. I am not experiencing one of the common bugs with this quest, since I did not even get his dagger. I successfully healed him and told him to wait outside of the cave. When I cleared the cave and returned, he was already on his way to Falkreath. I followed him and tried to talk to him, but can not initiate any kind of dialogue. He simply ignores me. I waited for him to get inside the Inn, but nothing changed. I also tried to reset the quest, to complete it, to set it to different stages, to disable and enable Valdr and even used recycleactor on him, via the console, without any effect. I am stuck at "Return to Valdr" and did not get his dagger.

Just noticed that Valdr does not react to combat either. I can attack him without any consequences, the other NPCs in the Inn ignore it as well. The quest is stuck on "Return to Valdr" even when I reset or complete it via console. Besides being unable to initiate a dialogue, I can not wake him up by talking to him either, as you can with virtually every other NPC. Killing him does not cause the quest to fail either. Disabling and enabling him again just causes him to stand on the bed without doing anything.

It sounds a lot like Valdr may be dead, but the game has not registered him as dead and removed him from the game (for whatever reason). I've seen this type of behavior with other NPCs before.

Someone else had an issue with this quest (not the exact same one) a while back and they determined it was a result of a mod (Volkihar Castle Redux). See http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1476436-problem-with-hunter-and-hunted-quest/?p=23083901.

I am not using any mods besides the Unofficial Skyrim patches and his issue does not seem to be related to mine. There is no reason for Valdr to be considered dead. I healed him up, went into the cave without his assistance and cleared the few enemies within. When I got out he was on his way to Falkreath and it took me a few seconds to catch up. No enemies or anything else around at all. The Valdr in the game has the correct ref id, but does not seem to be considered as the correct NPC by the quest or any other NPCs. He is just ignored by everything and ignores me. If I simply delete him the quest marker keeps directing me to his bed. If he was falsely considered as dead, shouldn't the quest actually fail? Killing and reviving him afterwards did not help either. The quest seems to be completely broken, because completing/resetting/setting it to different stages does not change anything either.

In the case he is headed towards Falkreath, I would guess that for some reason the quest skipped some stages, because he isn't supposed to do this until the quest is completed. Do you have a game save prior to starting the quest and using the console commands to try and fix it? If so, it may work properly next time. I also use the Unofficial Patches and have not ever had any issues with this quest, so I'm not exactly sure what could be causing the problem. The only other thing I could suggest is to make sure your load order is correct by using http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/6/?, especially if you are using the http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/searchresults/?src_cat=84 (2.0.0) of the Unofficial Patches, because the proper load order changed.

Yes, I am using the latest version and my load order is correct. Is there any way to simply force the quest to be considered as completed in my quest log (and thereby remove the "Return the Valdr" entry)? I would simply spawn Valdr's Lucky Dagger myself then. completequest did not work, as I already mentioned.

I could reload a previous quest, but I am getting kind of tired of encountering a broken quest like every 10 hours, which requires me to replay multiple hours in order to fix it, although I am already using the Unofficial patches. It's just complete killjoy.

  • These two commands might work:
  • setstage dunMossMotherQST 10 followed by setstage dunMossMotherQST 20

Nope, already tried that. I even reset the whole quest, started it again and set it to each of its stages individually - the quest is always stuck on "Return to Valdr" in my quest log. The only difference "resetquest" makes is that the quest marker disappears. Is there no way to simply force a questlog entry to disappear or appear as completed, besides resetquest and completequest?

Not that I am aware of, but I'm not an expert in using console commands. Maybe there's someone else on these forums that might know.

Can anything else, like the Creation Kit, do anything like that? Might be good to know for future uses, because this certainly wont be the last broken quest I am going to encounter.

The Creation Kit may be able to fix it, but I'm not an expert in using that either.

Something else I might suggest doing is reporting the issue to the people who are responsible for making the Unofficial Patches (they appreciate it when people report bugs). If you have one or more game saves with this issue, there is a possiblity they may be able to fix it in a future version. If you're interested, you can put the save file(s) in an archive folder (e.g. ZIP) and upload them to a file sharing site (like Dropbox) and then post the link in http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1477074-relz-unofficial-skyrim-patch-thread-38/page-5 and describe your issue in as much detail as possible. Arthmoor or one of the other people that work on the UP Project should take note of it.
