Mods for an Immersive Skyrim - choices and consequences

Post » Wed Dec 04, 2013 5:56 pm

A "what mods to use" thread with a difference - I hope

I have played Skyrim since the start. But with the end of the DLCs I decided to go for one last "definitive" Skyrim play, using a "maximum" number of carefully chosen mods. Key principles being:

  • hardcoe - but from survivalism not uber-enemies
  • Rich - more intensity within Skyrim - no new lands other than the DLCs
  • Immersive - not just the obvious, but also avoiding f.x. NPCs that talk too much
  • Choices & Consequences - not Skyrim's strongest suit, but lets add where we can
  • Impact - since max 255 esp/esms, then let each one count
  • Focus - no generic overhauls. Deep in one area is better than shallow in many for me
  • Updated - revisions due to user feedback are a good sign, as is a 2013 esp date

Based on this, I have developed over the last few months a "short" list of some 200 carefully considered mods. Some mainstream, others much less so. Now I want to start building. I intend to add 10 or so mods at a time - which I will post in this thread. Then test, revise and move on. I know its unlikely I hit 255 esps/esms before I run into issues, but I have an uber-rig and have I believe paid attention to best practice, so lets see where the wall is

I hope that some of what I do or think is useful to others, as well as to also get some constructive feedback for myself

And for my first "10" - I did the following
  • A completely clean install
  • I followed Neovalen's excellent STEP revisited guide - until the end of "Optimizing Bethesda Textures"
  • I did not optimize the textures, but I did unpack and use as loose files to avoid using unnecessary esp slots
  • Installed all the Unofficial Patches - again unpacking to loose files and avoiding the esp for the Texture Patch
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/6491/?
  • Peak RAM/VRAM currently is c. 1220/1125 (vs 795/777 vanilla). So far nowhere near the 3.1MB issue
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/3863/?
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/33395//?
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/26126/?. No need for an esp
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/14227/?. No need for an esp
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10383/?
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/28642//?. No need for an esp
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/8655/?
  • Peak RAM/VRAM now 1560/1425. Still ok
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/11163/?
  • Installed http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/34612//?
  • That will do for now. Up to 16 ESP/ESM slots, including the Bashed Patch slot, and so far no run issues found

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/26359/?Quests don't get added to your journal just because you hear some rumor. Gives you the choice to NOT take quests. (and not have them show up in your journal. :) )

Unpacking is a bad practice, according to Arthmoor and other experimented modders.

Its on my list for a later round of additions.

Will dig into this. Since I am using Mod Organizer, then the unpacked textures etc. still "exist" in their own archive, so I can remove them easily and/or adjust load order relatively simply - so that takes care of one reason against unpacking. But would be good to know if there is a more fundamental objection that I have missed. And I did not unpack the DLCs themselves.

I have to go to work but I'm pretty sure other people will be able to give you explanations or other links. ;)

Hmmm. So then why do we have a pinned thread at the top of this forum - "BSAs and You" with a specfic section ("What this means for mod users") providing a recommended way to unpack BSAs (those with just textures). Arthmoor even asks for the thread to be pinned since its so valuable. But I agree this seems to fly in the face of the link you provided.

I feel sure I must be missing something, but so far I have not found a compelling reason not to unpack "texture" BSAs. For me the "freed up" esp slot and the greater "equality" of knowing which textures overide which other textures (no loose files overrding BSAs) seems attractive

You could do what I do... For texture-only mods, just extract everything to a fake Data folder then use the Archive.exe utility that comes with the game to compress them all into a single .BSA, and use a fake .ESP named the same like the HD texture packs do to load it all in one slot. So long as the final compressed size doesn't go over ~1.3gb you should be fine. I have all my mesh and textures mods consilidated into three massive ~1.3gb .BSA files and their associated .ESP loaders and it has been working great. No mod limit and no clutter.

As for my list... Here ya go:
  • The official HD texture DLC, plus A MIX from various HD texture mods, including SOME textures from, but not limited to:

Hmm... This list may be a bit overkill. The first section is all texture mods which to me go towards "immersion", but you may not think so... The main immersion type mods I use right now are Wet and Cold and Realistic Needs and Diseases.

Nice list, Phinix. Several replacers I hadn't even heard of - much to check out. :tops:

Imps More Complex Needs

Pure Waters

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/1111

For the Waters, I would say the 2 best right now [imo] are Pure Waters and Realistic Water Two [as stated above].

Here's a vidya comparing the 2:

So the second round of "10" additions:
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/27043/? - with the two optional esps. May have to come back later depending on what other mods I add
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/38151/?
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/41076/? - with the RND compatible esp (note needs a manaul install using Mod Organizer)
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/26228/? Still not completely sure of this over Kuertee's EAS
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/3222/?
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/95/? (Fertigo Pro)
  • http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/4862/?, and the ONI edition
Ok, that a bit more than 10... Enough for the moment

I am holding off MOST of the texture addins for the moment until I see how the memory usage goes with the more "content" oriented mods I am adding

Thanks for the suggestions in the posts above. As you see, some of them on my list already, and others likely to get added later on. Will see if I can comment more later, but on the road this week, so nothing major for next few days

Yes. It'es definitely a bad pratice, based on urban legend, especially when the user doesnt know what he is doing.

The only relevant cases, is when you want to - absolutely - avoid the use of an esp, or when you want to have some specific files to be always load over other mods.

other than that, it's pointless.
