Dwemer Dating

Post » Wed Dec 04, 2013 11:44 am

No, this thread isn't about Dwemer lads sending racy thought-calls to Dwemer lasses during Anti-Creation 801.

Though Dwemer courtship could be an interesting topic in and of itself, and due to the ambiguity of my topic title, I grant my implicit permission to go off topic down that avenue.

My real question is this: is there any known explanation for how Dwemer marked dates? We have this example from the Chronicles of Nchuleft. Are there other examples of this method? Or was this perhaps exclusive to the residents of the Nchuleft Freehold Colony?

Second Planting is probably anologous to Second Seed (May). But what about P.D? How do those numbers relate to other races' time-keeping with respect to eras?

So, let's talk about Dwemer Dating.

Personally, I picture Dwemer would date each other based, on intelligence and not aesthetics.

I'm fond of the celestial dating systemhttp://www.gamesas.com/topic/1468572-the-epithalamium-of-arimatha/ (also contains apocrypha about dwemer courtship ;) )- gives a nice reason for all the orreries and is a satisfyingly scientific way to mark dates

That would be mid-merethic era.

EDIT: Oops, didn't mean to make that two separate posts :blush2:

Which is the same.

So, P.D. 1220 is ME 1280.

Not necessarily. The way I understand it merethic dating is backwards - ME2000 happened before ME1000.

Never mind, you actually said that. I'm tired.

Post-Dawn makes more sense, but what about Post-Dwemereth? So, 1220 years after the Chimer muscled their way to the east?

That works.

While the date doesn't really match up, I think it would be poetic to refer to the Anumidium as "Dwemereth"; hence P.D. is Pre-Dwemereth. But then that presents an altogether too idealistic view of a unified dwarven people with a clear vision, rather than the fate of the Dwemer as an extreme measure imposed by the necessity of universal doubt.

Alternatively, PD is merely "posited date"; they don't measure time with absolutes, only proposals.

So proposals are:

Post Dawn

Post Dwemereth

Posited Date

Principal Determinant (how did this get here?)

All great possibilities which I think could use some more investigation. I'm gonna go peruse the Epithalamium now and see what I can misunderstand there. Continue with the dating discussion, please. :)

Heheh.

I was secretly hoping this might devolve into senseless venereal dwemer techno babble if we couldn't answer the first question.
