Charcoal is needed to make Steel Ingots? You sure you don't mean Corundum?

Charcoal has no usefulness in the game in smithing anything at a forge.

Spoiler
Corundum ore is available by mining corundum ore veins and sometimes from blacksmiths. Steel ingots can also be bought from blacksmiths.

Unless hes using a mod that changes that.

It may be sold by armourers or general merchants.

3 places where it is certain to be found in some quantity are Calcelmo's Tower in Markarth, Frostflow Lighthouse and Skuldafn Temple which have 13, 6 and 5 pieces respectively.

If you're using the Complete Crafting Overhaul mod you can use a smelter to turn firewood into charcoal.

I did this when the game first came out, collecting charcoal for steel because it made perfect sense, only to realise I had wasted my time. Totally understandable mistake, unlike not realising the sprint button works on horses for ages.

If your using the requiem mod then you can use firewood to make charcoal at smelters.

Don't some Dwemer Ruins occasionally have some?

Go to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Calcelmo%27s_Tower#Calcelmo.27s_Tower in Markath Sir. It's part of a that quest that you do.

There is enough Charcoal in that area to 'pop a cap' in every Foresworn in The Reach.

Preferably using a trot-by with pony.

And your homies.

Whiterun massiv for loife.

I'm still trying to figure out what charcoal is used for. Does it serve a purpose in the unmodded game at all?
