Not done it before and was just wondering if it's worth doing.

If you want a quick 3000 gold sure, I'm not sure if the amount of gold is leveled though....
I do it with most of my characters, simply because i detest the Dark Brotherhood and every thing and every one in it.
All you end up getting is whatever plunder in the hideout, and on their bodies, and some gold. No quests involving them, and a few of the dungeons will be locked to you. There will be a couple/three missed word walls.
I did once, destroyed them, and that was it. Never did it again when I found out that keeping them was worth more than destroying them.
I'd feel better if the job could be really completed and the destruction extended to a certain jester and his mother. I get the feeling that those two are just laughing that I'd done the dirty work for them.
You have the option of
LOL No she is not. Go to my profile page and click on the link at the bottom to my facebook page, and you will see the whole picture. The picture fits my sig but I had to crop it for here.
The Dark Brotherhood does send assassins after the player. Remember what they say about payback.
To keep my character "good" and to experience a huge devotion of Bethesda's time to a particular guild, I usually RP a "nightmare quest" in which I save after falling asleep and do the quest. Upon completion, I revert to the old save and continue on my way.
It also gives you things like
A good way to get the word from the otherwise locked word wall for a character who wouldn't join them, and it makes the random annoying assassin attempts stop.
I've destroyed them twice, ignored them the other times (most characters of mine don't even investigate the rumors about Aventus Aretino) but I've yet to make a character who would even consider joining them. I plan on doing it - some day.
Is there an option to join them, then destroy them or is it one or the other?
Basically this.
Destroying the DB is like cutting off your sword swinging arm.
At the bottom of a 12 level dragur filled dungeon.
And then expecting to survive that long dark climb from its abyss to the surface.......
Regardless of whether or not you care for the DB, they're actually essential to the rp and immersion aspect of the game. If you play the TG questline, it greatly benefits you to play the DB one as well. Because the 2 factions compliment each other extremely well in terms of the rp aspect, rewards and benefits (magical weapons, armor, septims, property etc) you get for being guild master of both.
Also if money is important to you when rpging, then your character will be SIGNIFICANTLY poorer in septims by NOT becoming the DB master. Besides, wiping them out only temporarily removes them from Skyrim.
Finally, the Most Dread Lord Sithis is always omniscient and omnipotent. So they're bound to arise elsewhere in Tamriel (just like they did if you wiped them out back in Oblivion). And I'm very confident Beth will deem it fit to resurrect them by TES VI
