Voice Act guidelines

Post » Mon Dec 16, 2013 4:01 am

Hello , Since its been a while from when I used to organize this stuff into a proper mod, I forgot most of the important info, wich is not about how to put ingame but the actual file formats required for voice actors.

So if I have to organize the several lines said by voice actors , what requirements I should ask to actors in order to receive quality files for implementation ing CK ?

I mean stuff like recording speed, format file , stereo or not etc ... ?

from what I remember shoudl be like :

mono
16-bit
.wav

but not sure and how about having a standard level of sound recording so that every actor sounds and plays at the same level ?

Recording level is mostly dependent on the gear who ever records the lines has. You'll definitely want a sound editor like Audacity to work on the files, trim them if necessary and any other post-processing that you may need. I use Wave Pad sound editor mostly because of it's batch convert feature, but Audacity is free. They should also be 44100 sample rate as well.

You are correct, you need: 44100hz, Mono Channel 16-bit waveform audio files.

For volume, take all of them and load them in Audacity, then select 'Normalize' (From one of the dropdowns at the top) and enter something between -1 and -4 depending on the audio. (Loud deep people [usually men] go a bit lower, light 'shallow' people [usually women] go higher) This will even ALL audio files to that level, ensuring they are all roughly the exact same volume. Thus you get nice even dialogue in game. Then 'Export Multiple' and save them all out.

Then of course just convert and get in game.
