Got any CHEMS ? Aid Items Discussion

Post » Tue Dec 17, 2013 2:19 am

Pssst, Got any chems?

What’s your favorite chem or aid item that you keep in your inventory?

Do you craft any chems, aid or food of any kind?

If you could pick one chem, food or aid item what would you choose ? Do you have tips you want to share ?

How do you roleplay the effect of Jet or Steady or other chems? What would it feel like?

What do they do to you in addition to the mechanic?

What is it like to be a Medical Doctor in the Fallout World?

Maybe that mechanic annoys you? Should chems even be in the game?

Do you have a question or a comment?

Stimpacks

Stimpacks

Stimpacks

Might feel weird I guess?

The stimpacks? they heal me.
Pretty good, make lots of caps cause most people are always hurt.

Of course they should and there are no mechanics that annoy me.

My question, how would you answer your list of questions?

I feel like the role of a physician in the Fallout world depends largely on how much power a stimpak has. If a magical syringe can really cure anything from cholera to stab wounds, there is not much need for physicians.

If you can define the limits of what a stimpak can do, I can tell you what role modern medicine would play. The more power and versatility that you give to the stimpak, the more useless modern medicine becomes.....

You can come back as many times as you want. You can even ask more questions. Or we could quote you and ask you questions.OR I can answer your question with another question ? Have you ever suffered from Stimpack sickness?

The mechanics of the hp/chem/food system have to be completely bogus because it is a video game and no one can wait weeks for a broken bone to heal. The concept of a stimpak is wildly ridiculous, but a version of it is present and accepted in almost every video game.

The existence of stimpaks as a one size fits all treatment for all illness would make a doctor’s knowledge useless. Why would you need to be able to diagnose an illness if the answer was always stimpak? Why would you need to know pharmacology if the “stimpak” assumes the role of all modern drugs and more?

I like to assume that a stimpak is just used to stop bleeding and can accelerate wound healing. I assume that stimpaks cannot replace most drugs

I will say that it is pretty annoying to get addicted to alcohol after 3 beers in the game....

I am confused on the role of medicine in Fallout myself.... The poster in the link I posted makes it seem like stimpaks can do anything. If that is true, a doctor is useless.

On hardcoe, stimpaks cannot heal your limbs, radiation, addictions, etc. so there is hope for medicine. The fact that there is always things like scalpels, bone saws, surgical tubing, etc. in medical tents would also suggest that stimpaks do have limits and that real medical training is still valuable. There is a few missions at Forlorn Hope and with the Boomers where you heal patients using medical knowledge instead of just shooting them up with stims as well.

In the end, I think there is a logic gap when it comes to magical stimpaks existing at the same time as the modern medical approach.

Play New Vegas on hardcoe, Stimpacks are only really useful outside of Combat to steadily regenerate Health. Disabled Limbs require Hydra or a Doctors Bag to Heal.

I enjoy the idea of injecting a mix of antibiotics and steroids to greatly increase the regeneration rate of My character. Taking a dose of Slasher and Rushing Water before the hoard of Nightstalkers rush my Melee and Unarmed characters in New Vegas has become a recent ritual.

An actual Doctor in Fallout likely makes a living treating Addiction and Radiation Sickness. I can see a Doctor ignoring bleeding with the knowledge that a Stimpack can fix the bleeding after the bone has been mended and the wound has been cleaned of dirt.

"I enjoy the idea of injecting a mix of antibiotics and steroids to greatly increase the regeneration rate of My character."

I get what you are saying, but a stimpak has to go way beyond just antibiotics and steroids. Steroids are good for treating autoimmune conditions and allergic reactions, but they also suppress the immune system. This is why I struggle with the concept of a cure all drug.... What is useful for an allergic reaction, may be terrible for an infection.

Also, giving a garden variety of powerful antibiotics for all injuries would create widespread resistance and an extremely high risk situation for something opportunistic like C. diff to take over as a predominant gut flora. Many stimpak users would end up with nasty conditions like pseudomembranous colitis and even toxic megacolon in some instances.

I guess we just write it up as a future miracle drug?

I agree, but a Stimpack is based on Restore Health Potions from Tabletop RPG's.
