Re-installing Giants Ultimate

Post » Sun Apr 25, 2010 6:35 pm

I've been doing some spring-cleaning on my Morrowind mods list and decided to go through and uninstall the game then reinstall the mods I wanted to keep as well as find a few new mods. Well, one the my keeper mods is Giant's Ultimate, but I can't seem to get the mod to install correctly.

The mod is installed through a .exe, but when I run the program, Giants.esm is not copying into my Morrowind data files folder. I know I have had this mod installed before, but I can't remember what I ended up doing last time to fix any issues. I think this is a Vista problem, but I shouldn't be running into administrator issues as I have reinstalled Morrowind in a new location other than the default. Does anyone know what could be causing this issue or if it comes to it if I can find the mod for download in a non .exe install format?

Well, I found the .esm but now I seem to have a new problem with missing meshes and animations. My Warnings.txt file shows the following:

Model Load Error: Meshes\G_Ult\Giants_GiantSPblack.nif cannot load file in Meshes\G_Ult\Giants_GiantSPblack.nif.
Will use the default object Marker_Error.NIF.
Creature "spider_black_small00000000" has no animation groups.
Morrowind will crash!

Does anybody know how to correct this? If I cannot find a solution to this problem, I will forgo using Giants and try a different creatures mod.

I managed to fix this by un-checking Mashed Lists.esp, but now I'm not so sure I'm using Wrye Mash correctly. I made a mashed list since I'm using Giants and MCA which both edit levelled lists and would need merged. I thought that the mashed list esp needed checked off to work but I'm not sure if that's correct or not now.

Except it looks like that only managed to delay the warning messages coming up. I'm getting more of them at a later point.

Model Load Error: Meshes\G_Ult\QP\creatThornScampSml.NIF cannot load file in Meshes\G_Ult\QP\creatThornScampSml.NIF.
Will use the default object Marker_Error.NIF.
Creature "Night_Sprite_lesser0100000000" has no animation groups.
Morrowind will crash!
Model Load Error: Meshes\G_Ult\Giants_GiantSPblack.nif cannot load file in Meshes\G_Ult\Giants_GiantSPblack.nif.
Will use the default object Marker_Error.NIF.
Creature "spider_black_small00000000" has no animation groups.
Morrowind will crash!
Creature "Night_Sprite_lesser0100000001" has no animation groups.
Morrowind will crash!
Creature "Night_Sprite_lesser0100000002" has no animation groups.
Morrowind will crash!
Texture "Textures\_land_default.tga" count 3.
Texture "Textures\Tx_BC_dirt.tga" count 3.
Texture "Textures\menu_thick_border_bottom_right_corner.dds" count 2.

Now I don't think the mod installed correctly which again I think goes back to using .exe installs on Windows Vista. I'm probably going to give up on this mod at this rate unless it is out there in a manual install format or anyone knows how to get .exe mods to install correctly in Vista.

One important thing to know about Giants Ultimate is that it uses AddtoLev. In other words, it doesn't work with merged leveled lists. There is a patch for it http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8112. That should fix quite a few problems.

During the installation, my advice is to install on the desktop and then manually move everything in your Morrowind folders. Be sure to install "GIANTS Ultimate Data Files.exe" and "GIANTS Ultimate.exe".

I got it to work by doing the install to desktop and then moving everything manually. I guess I wasn't aware that the levelled list fix wouldn't work by simply making a merged list. I will install the patch followed by a couple more mods before I'm done adding things. I haven't actually started my new game yet, just played a little bit in for play testing purposes to make sure all mods are working correctly. I think that I might have messed some things up by uninstalling all and starting over from a fresh installation of Morrowind, but hopefully I should be able to fix those things. I did notice even with getting the mod to work correctly that the game seems to run choppy, but I have a feeling that that is just due to me having several other programs open plus a mod downloading at the same time. I plan to finish downloading and add Darker Morrowind followed by Piratelord's Creatures before I start a serious character to play through the game. For now, I think I have all the kinks ironed out and am hopeful that my last couple mods I add won't cause any more issues.

Thanks for the help. I seem to have the game up and running fine now. There's just 1 problem left and that involves finding a mod. I mentioned I wanted to add Piratelord's Creatures X to my game, but for some reason the download link on his site doesn't work any more. Could someone direct me to a working download for this mod?

It's on both PES and TESNexus.

I found it. Now I should have all the mods I was looking for. I might give PES a look over for the latest mods to see if anything catches my eyes, but for now I think I'm set.

IIRC, there's a patch for ThePumaman's Giants mod that's only included in his Wilderness Mod 2.0 (that's on PES). I'd recommend the Unofficial Giants Patch too (by Michael "Helios" Bennett), also on PES, as I considered that pretty essential when I used Giants.
