Having issues updating Skyrim on Steam...

Post » Fri Dec 20, 2013 1:20 pm

I just built my PC yesterday so forgive the possibly noobish question...

Last night I installed both Steam and Skyrim under Program Files. I open Steam and everything updates just fine. I play a little while to check that everything's working fine and then call it quits for the night.

This morning I read that having Skyrim under Program Files can be troublesome, so I uninstalled both Skyrim and Steam and reinstalled them under User/Administrator. Now when I go into Steam to play it asks me to update it like it did last time but the download isn't going anywhere. It downloaded 1% of the update and now it keeps giving me time out error messages. What's causing this? Nothing happened to my internet connection. Is this being caused by me reinstalling Steam in a different folder than usual?

I don't get it: You played last night and it was ok.

Then the other day you uninstalled the whole think and re-installed it on a different folder. Only because you have read something over the net.

(Actually you don't install it on the programs files folder for two reasons: You could have problem because the windows U.A.C (user account control), or if you install some specific mod's.)

The first is confirmed by me. UAC shouldn't bother you, it works with UAC enabled very well. The second one, i don't know because i play without mods.

It could be a server time out error problem.

You could try to verify your game cache files, and after that try to update again !!!!! (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335)

Wish you luck !!!!

Those are the exact reasons I reinstalled, as I'm looking forward to a mod-heavy playthrough.

And yeah, it keeps timing me out, so you think it might be Steam's server? I'll try again when I get home and see what happens.

You don't install programs in the user folder. Honestly, I've had steam and my steam games installed under program files for years and zero issues with heavy mods.

If you want to install steam outside the program files folder you need to install it in something like c:\games\skyrim or something like that. Create a new directory. The user directory isn't meant to house installed programs.
