A lot of 'free' MMORPGs either have micropayments or paywalls for content. For example, Star Wars: The Old Republic is free to play now, but if you're f2p you're handicapped by restrictions on virtually everything, lessening the experience. Something to be aware of before jumping into the F2P MMO market.

Personally though, I would recommend Rift. It's quite similar to World of Warcraft in terms of gameplay, and features a well-written fantasy world. Questing can feel a little grindy at times, but it's still extremely fun to play, and the game isnt really hampered by any major restrictions on f2p players.

Another option might be Guild Wars 2. While you have to actually buy the game itself, it's a one off fee, and you have no subscriptions afterward. There's a microtransaction store, but it mostly has comestic items.

Meridian 59, what may well be the first MMORPG. It's fantasy, its even first-person, its totally free, and theres no pay content so you don't lose anything. The game is also structured in a way that means despite the year gap, you are not helpless against veterans. And it rewards exploration, since thats the priamry means you get access to more of that game's version of Magicka.

It was released in 1996. it remains online to this day.

My favorite MMO is also free to play: https://www.vanguardthegame.com/home The creativity of the world design and architecture reminds me of Morrowind and parts of Skyrim. It's an absolutely massive open-world game world, split into three continents. I think it's well worth giving it a chance, if you like open world roleplaying games and Elder Scrolls in particular.

Lord of the rings Online is F2P now I believe..

now, I haven't played it since back when it was subscription based, but if you enjoy Tolkeins work, or just fantasy worlds in general I would definitely give it a try

Star Trek online is pretty good. It has micro transactions but most of them are for simple cosmetic items or ships which really aren't all that good anyway.

Plus with enough play you can get yourself the currency for those transactions and get these items without paying a cent. Takes forever but it's possible.
