The Apologists of Moonshadow: An Invitation
by Ralyn Valthyris

Dear reader, if you have opened this book, you know that I speak for Azura. Queen of Dusk and Dawn. Morrowind's misguided prejudices led me to the little-known island of Solstheim six months ago from as I am writing this. I sought guidance, I sought knowledge. Too self-absorbed was Morrowind's politics, too naive were their beliefs. But at this moment I speak to you not as a follow of Azura and the other 'good' Daedra, but as a student of the arcane. I invite you reader to join me in Solstheim. To learn from me, to learn with me about the temperament of magic. I invite conjurers, illusionists, scholars and mystics alike to study with me in solitude. Away from the false Tribunal, and away from Imperial jurisdiction.

We are, or rather.. we will be, essentially a mages college. I studied with the Mages Guild in Morrowind for a few decades and found myself dissapointed with the lack of acknowledgment for our ancestors in Morrowind. Let us not forget why we Dunmer left the Summerset Isles to begin with.. But alas, this is not a lesson in history. All you must know is that we study and obey the three 'good' Daedra. Azura, Boethia, and Mephala. We allow these gods to guide us in our study, and we thus devote our institute to them.

It puts my teeth on edge how my brothers back in Morrowind call the Tribunal their 'gods.' You must open your mind to understand what I am about to tell you reader, for I cannot force you to believe what I believe. These 'Tribunal,' they tricked the Daedra into making them gods. They defy the will of our true gods and ancestors. I have a strong cause to believe that the Tribunal trifled with an aspect of Lorkhan himself, making them immortal beings. Forever free to curse the names of our beloved gods by calling themselves the aspects. In my travels I have spoken to Ashlander cults who believe in a man named 'the Nerevarine,' an outlander who will purge Morrowind of our false Tribunal 'gods.' And restore worship of our true pantheon. Read this section as many times as you need to before continuing.

Do not mistake my anger for insolence, or stupidity. I am no fool, we mer have no means of challenging our authority. I do not wish to be the leader of a cause, but a mere opener of human and elven eyes alike. So I live in a fortress handed down to me by my grandfather in the unforgiving forests of Solstheim. I will be honest with you dear reader, it is not complete. While me inheriting this place was.... miraculous, in order for my dreams to come true I need investment so I can continue working on opening this fortress as a place of worship and study. I have taken to calling myself and my son, 'Apologists of Moonshadow' in tribute of our beloved Azura.

If you are still reading, then I trust that you possess an able and eager mind. I seek not talented scholars, master conjurers, heroric ice-mages... I seek students, those willing to learn. Those willing to live how our gods intended us to live. In service to study and in service to the Daedra and our ancestors. We welcome all, man and mer alike. Your service to magic and your service to our gods is what is paramount to our guild. We study Illusion, for we give praise to Mephala for the gifts of quiet feet and spells that obscure our very being. We study Conjuration, to act in partnership with the lesser Daedra of Oblivion and to learn from them. We study Destruction, for a mage must sometimes wield fire and ice to preserve his knowledge. We study Mysticism, for Azura would have us be aware of those around us, and possess keen eyes like her cat-men the Khajiit. The study of Enchanting and Alchemy is also included here.

If you wish to become an Apologist of Moonshadow yourself, then you must make your way to Solstheim. I got here on a boat from Khuul, a seaport village in Vvardenfell. My sources tell me that there is also a boat from 'Windhelm' if you are of Nordic stock. My details can be found below, I trust that you will inform me of your visit to my fortress before you arrive. Me, Ralyns and my beloved son welcome you to our institute. Do not forget, we must ask you to provide us with a sum of gold upon entry. For we plan to expand. We plan to build towers, plant inhabitable flora and fill our fortress with books.

Initiation:
- Bring up to 2,000 gold Septims upon your arrival to the Fortress

- Look for us at the Western Coast of Solstheim. Keep your senses about you, and you will find your way.

- Specify as to which position you would like at our institute, you may choose to take residence in any of
these future structures:

- The Tower of Plots (Boethiah: Destruction, Alchemy)
- The Tower of Dusk and Dawn (Azura: Enchanting, Conjuration)
- The Hall of Secrecy (Mephala: Illusion, Mysticism)
- The House of Nordic interest (The study of Solstheim itself. The study of the Nordic Pantheon and Nord history)

- Send a courier to the West Coast of Solstheim with a letter including your details, tell him to follow
the glow. He will find his way, as will you if you decide to join.

Background:

Born in Mournhold in the Third Era in the year 324, Ralyn Valthyris was born to a noble family of Dunmer who prided tradition and influence. Thus, they were quite popular with the native House Indoril, however his family were never 'true' supporters. At a young age he left for Almalexia to study with the Mages Guild chapter there. Upon studying there he met a Khajiit fellow who introduced him to Azura, or Azurah as she was known to him. He began to read up on the ancestors who led the Chimer out of the Summerset Isles and into Morrowind. He devoted his life to the study of the Daedra and after years of study, came to the conclusion that Azura, Boethiah and Mephala were the true gods of any Dunmer.

He left for Vvardenfell in his nineties to study the Tribunal Temple. He came to realise that in his view, these gods were not worthy of any Dunmer's worship and a few years later, left for Solstheim with his son to found a new guild dedicated to magical study, and worship of the three 'good' Daedra.
