Forbes: ESO will be the biggest disaster of 2014

Post » Sat Jan 04, 2014 3:36 pm

With the exception of GW2, I agree.

Most F2P games just gauge you on monetization. The game generally suffers and you hit content walls often.

I'm not sure how GW2 did it but that's the only game that managed to make a quality game that wasn't B2P and didn't lock content.

That said, I'm fine with ESO's model as long as they keep up their promises on content updates.

The guy draws conclusions from out of thin air, based on solely his personal feelings and hunches. "No one wanted a ES MMO" and "The game doesn't deserve a 200m budget" are examples of these laughable comments.

Also, I called uninformed doomsaying when I read: "A further complication is that Bethesda isn’t exactly famous for releasing bug free single player games, so when they make the jump to an MMO, longtime fans are incredibly wary from the start, wondering if the game will even work at launch." I mean.. seriously? First of all, he says Bethesda. Come one man every single person that bothers to read about the game before posting an article knows the game is being developed by ZOS. What does Bethesda having trouble with bugs have to do with ESO? Also, I have seen critical posts (serious ones and trolly ones), but none of the were predicting the game would not even work, because coding or w/e would be broken so bad. Again, the guy is just babling, highly exaggerating and pulling stuff out of thin air.

Worthless article all around. The only thing that made me smile is that he couldn't resist the urge to bring up the P2P aspect of the game. Oh how wonderful to read such a new and original POV.

In my opinion too early to lift NDA - until open beta starts, then all people can check. No matter how much bad press they take - I guess even more people will try it for free during open beta when press is bad.

There is so much nonsense in this article, like "who ever asked for ESO", just as if all people asked for all other games and only ESO is exception - the guy probably does not know that many people asked for multi player TES.

You see - you can buy or sponsor a plenty of such articles, but you never can buy 1.7mln likes in FB - those are who asked and who really made NCSoft deep thinking.

Yeah, there's a lot of positive stuff I want to say about this game but can't due to NDA. I don't think it's quite time to lift it yet, but probably just before open beta would be the optimal time, since chances are people are still going to check it out.

More on-topic, the instant they brought up the SWTOR and failed P2P model of theirs I stopped reading and assumed everything after that is invalid.

Was some good entertainment, at least.

it will be 1st  , but actually I think not the 1st april, but some similar when open beta is opened. Since it is not decided if there will be free trial (or I just have not hear) the open beta will be first try&buy for all. The bad effect of it might be that reall mass of players will try open beta - I would split them. Also GW2 did open beta only on weekends.

This is not forbes. Anything that says forbes.com/sites/ is a blog that is hosted on forbes. It is as much forbes as I am Bethesda.

Jeeze, bad article :o What are the print media stooping to? The whole premise is that discredited "200 million" tweet, which was labeled a "rumor" to begin with. Whatever happened to EDITORS? and FACT CHECKERS? >< That is the only justification the print media has for still existing, so if THEY give it up, we might as well just get our information from the Huffington Post, free!

Anyway, yeah. ESO bears no resemblance to SWTOR... having played SWTOR, I can say that aside from the single-player storylines, it is a much WORSE game than WoW. The quests, literally, are "kill 50 ewoks" or whatever the local enemy is. And then "kill 100 slightly larger ewoks" >< Mind-numbingly grindy quest design and bland, airporty environments are why I stopped playing, although there are a few features I like, such as the companion system. By all accounts these are not issues ESO will suffer from.

Whether it stands or falls, of course, will depend on its own particular characteristics, and time will tell. I'm not gonna go out on a limb and predict glorious success, but reports of failure are premature ><

How many people do you think know that? The Forbes name carries weight, regardless of technicalities, and that is the problem.

Read this article yesterday, and I found it to be hilarious. I find it funny that people who never play MMOs or PC games in general thinks they know what they are talking about when they are discussing about something they don't ever play.

@Tonedog, not everyone knows everything. For example, do you know how much wood a wood chuck can chuck wood? And yes, I was being sarcastic too, so thanks jpp for realizing it. Just because I haven't heard of something doesn't mean anyone else hasn't.

two thumbs down, reading an article about gaming written by forbes, would be like reading an article written by ZOS, talking about wall street..LOL

A lot of what if's, specualation, personal opinion, there is always a chance all the games they talked about could fail nothing is a given..

Whatever happened to that game? Don't hear about it anymore since Sheek disappeared.

I'd say lets talk about Wildstar, but we're only allowed to up until what, level 15? And there sure as hell ain't really much to talk about.
